Last Thursday - Biloxi Marsh Report

Hey y'all, as always I want to start by telling y'all thanks. For every one of these that I've posted you guys have provided great feedback and I greatly appreciate that. And as always, I've got a new video to go with this report.

A few weeks ago I promised a second video from the same weekend and failed to deliver. As it turns out, recording fishing trips is more difficult than I thought. But on that trip, a friend and I went out to the Biloxi Marsh and destroyed the fish (12 reds, 16 bass, 38 trout) on matrix green hornets. Since then, Masson has posted two videos with that lure so I decided to do something else.

Last Thursday I decided to go back to where we tore those fish up. This area is the Northwestern corner of the Biloxi Marsh, west, and northwest of Stump Lagoon. Because it rained Thursday morning, I launched later than I wanted to, and got to the spot at about 9 am.

The conditions were mid-70s air temps, mid-60s water temps, 3-4' of water visibility, falling tide, and tons of grass. I caught all the fish in 1-4' of water - nothing on the bottom. My original plan was to try these old H&H cacahoe lures I still have from my dad but the grass would not allow for an exposed hook. So I went to a weedless gold spoon.

To be honest, I probably could have caught fish on anything. You'll see on the video, fish were attacking every one of my retrieves.

I've always heard gold spoons are for reds only but I've never believed that and this trip proved it. I caught two monster marsh bass (14" and 16") on this spoon, one 16" trout, and four reds, each between 20-29". The big problem with this lure is the weed guard. The water was so clear you can see all of this in the video. The fish were attacking the lure every cast but couldn't get through the heavy wire weed guard.

My guess is if I had more than two hours and could have used exposed hooks, I'd have doubled or tripled the amount of fish I caught out there. It was just one of those days.

So the moral of the story here is to match the hatch. My whole strategy was to fish with baitfish imitation lures and it was confirmed. We probably have another month of fishing with these style lures before we go back to shrimp imitation lures. In clear water - try to use something that mimics spooked baitfish. That's what the spoon does with subtle twitches and man was it effective. The fish even hit it multiple times - imagine that, getting metal in your mouth multiple times and still going after it. That's what the right presentation and conditions can do and damn is it fun watching that unfold.
