Have for years. Only shots I've gotten were in the area with the limited season. Pretty much have given up on it. Lots of pressure during the week.

I use to be in Paradise Gun and Rod Club which borders Ophelia. We would hunt Ophelia once we tagged out on our club and we had seen some great bucks on there. However, once they clear cut the refuge in some areas, the first 2 muzzle loader hunts were literal blood baths. It sounded like the opening morning on catahula lake. I went walking through the area and found multiple blood trails. Then some guy shot a huge buck and put a pic in Louisiana Sportsman. After that, everyone and their brother hunted the refuge and it went from great to decent at best.
Good luck hunting the area. There are some big bodied deer in the area. If you can hunt along the club line of Paradise Gun and Rod club there are some damn good crossings if you look hard. I've seen some great bucks cross back and forth and a ton of does. The most I've seen cross at one time was 18 when I stopped counting and that was in January. You definitely want to hunt there after Christmas. That's the best time to hunt it.

Good Luck and if you need any ideas on where to start scouting just leave me your email and I will hit you up.

Generally, what section of the refuge?

did you happen to hunt that area in the late '70s?....what you are describing to me sounds exactly like what I experienced there when the property was initially turned into a refuge...

my family was in a hunting club there during my childhood...I have some very fond memories of that time...

No I hunted it from about 1998-2006. It is still one of the best places I've ever hunted but the club got insane with it's rules so we got out.

I will have to go back and look at a map to get you exact areas. I haven't been back there since 2008 so I'm not sure if the areas are still called the same. I will get back with you tomorrow on it.

I see...my family was in a club called the "Old Tram Hunting Club"...the club is now gone since all of the land was either cleared or turned into a refuge...also had a small camp on the banks of Lake Long.

I need to take a ride around the place sometime just to see if I can recognize anything...

Cool. I'm just not familiar with that particular club. I used to hunt near McCann's place.

My FIL was in a club around Pointe Bausse?, he said the same thing you have about it being really nice back in the day, I only seen 2 last year and they were both too far away. Ive hunted that area, buck road and close to McCanns. Shoot me an email, sonoma_8@yahoo.com Just looking for a couple areas to focus to increase my chances. I live basically next door to Grand Cote refuge and I refuse to hunt there.

McCann use to only let ppl shoot bucks 150 class or better except for around the perimeters. Then he'd let them shoot 140 class bucks there. We would catch deer crossing back and forth a good bit. The problem is that both McCann and Paradise Gun & Rod had too many does so the bucks didn't have to look too hard during rut. My dad, bro, mom and I all killed some wall hangers off Paradise. They've turned it into a real trophy club last I heard.

Love this place. Lot of big deer and a lot of great memories spent there. Sad I'm having to sell my camp there.
