Perfect time for this thread. I just booked a weekend trip for dad and I today. Heading there end of feb as I hear it’s a good time to go. I’ve been twice and it is beautiful but I haven’t had much luck. Any tips on fishing for bass and sacs there would be appreciated.

Dont know any guides, but heres what I've learned: Late Feb thru Easter you can do well on bass under dock steps, cypress trunks, shallow weeds. Cats eat chicken livers on jugs or yoyo's. Sacs do well under cypress. Theres brush piles out in front of the public fishing dock at the state park that hold sacs. There's a cove on the outside near winter quarters bridge that's very active in the early morning and sunset times. Depth is always dependant on time of yr, water temps, the usual.

Yo-yo’s for the white perch. They should be outlawed.
Don’t know of a guide.

Look for piers with lights. Even if they aren’t on at night there’s a good chance there’s some Xmas trees around. Older the better.

Shiners for perch on the corners. Crank bait for bass.

I don't think they should be outlawed, but I think there needs to be stricter guidelines like you can't leave them unattended and out of sight.

I get pissed when I see old cypress trees covered in rusty yoyos with rusted hooks (obviously abandoned/left), and especially seeing dead perch on yoyos.

gotcha, that makes sense. Make people tag them could help. I thought you meant ban them off of docks and such. Now that you mention it i remember seeing tons of them on trees at lake bruin.

Once upon a time I spent many hours fishing with an old man learning the art of jigging for white perch. He had a piece of a cane pole with a razor attached to the end. As he was jigging he would pick up the cane pole and cut the string holding the old Yo-Yos that folks had left out. Being in the same boat with him you didn't notice the act. It was fluid motion that simply looked like jigging. I often wondered if he had ever cut down any that where new when he was alone with no witness to tell the story.

Yo-yo’s should be banned from docks, also. It’s not like it’s life or death to catch a fish. If you want to catch a fish, sit there and hold a pole.

So other people can catch the fish under the dock? It's not life or death to catch a fish...

Damn comrade. Slow down.

I grew up on Bruin all the time. Things have changed I am sure as I have not fished it in a while.

Things to do from here to the spawn based upon weather:

Flip trees on the outside if cold, dont have to worry too much about depth, just not too shallow.

Big old wobbly cranks on the outside as well as slow rolling spinner baits. When I say slow roll, I am meaning drag it across the bottom.

If a little warmer you can go to the inside and throw just about anything on the shallower banks. A little secret is a red rattle trap off those banks. You also do well with any type of weightless worm set up. Wobble heads work well, I have never done it but would love to throw a chatter bait over there as well on the right days. I always loved the bank between the island and the Golf course.

But know this, Bruin is as hot and cold as any lake you can fish. Some days you just cant buy a bite. If you are catching a bunch of little ones, do something different..there should be a bunch of 3 pound fish in there that will be biting something.

Perch, end of docks is all I would do at this time. I know nothing else. There are some wonderful brush piles out there, but you may spend a long time finding them.

In the spring you can jig on the shallow trees. Dont be afraid to take a bucket of shiners up into Brushly, I chased a bunch of stories about shallow white perch into that thing over the years and only caught them once, but damn it was good.
