I keep two rods with mono for cranks. The rest have power pro. If you use mono backing the price isn't that bad. Every now and then Field and Stream runs a good special on PP.

about how much backing of mono should I use? If I'm putting 35lb braid, will 10lb mono work for the backing, or should i go up to 17lb or 20lb mono?? Do yall use a mono leader, also? I'm gonna set up a texas rig, and a Carolina rig with braid.

I use at least half but probably a little more. My theory is by the time I start getting close to the splice it would be time to re-string again anyway.

10# is fine. The 35# has a diamter of around 10# I would guess.

No

I would put the texas rig on braid.

Not the carolina rig? I mean the leader would be mono, but the rest braid.

If I only had two rods and only one had braid I would put the texas rig on the braid. Around here you will be flipping the texas rig and the lack of stretch will help you get those fish out of the cover easier.

Truth be told, I probably wouldn't even have a carolina rig for fishing around here. You would be better off with a moving bait like a crank, spinnerbait, buzzbait or something like that.

This is my opinion only.

Well I have three bass rods. One will have mono, and I was gonna put braid on the other two.

I was told about a month ago some guys were hammering bass on carolina rigs in Henerson. That's the only reason I tried it a while yesterday.

So if you had to set up three, one for a crank (mono) one for a texas rig (braid), what would your third option be?

Hey any of y'all use 13 fishing reels? I need a new reel and considering giving those guys a shot. They have a new one coming out in early 2018 called conceptZ. It will have zero ball bearings.. only some sort of polymer bearings. Which Would be badass for saltwater for sure.

Those are about 3 or 4 times my price limit for a reel

To be honest, if I were to spend $200 on a reel, I would get 5 of the pflueger reels i got from walmart for $40 and just rotate em out, and have em regularly serviced. I really like the pflueger reel, and i can cast it further than any of my others, but the salt water will destroy it if not taken good care of.

ETA: I used to for trout a few weekends ago and didnt rinse it well after using it, and it already had corrosion spots on the outside of the reel.

I don't think I've ever thrown a Carolina rig in Henderson. But fishing deep humps in Toledo Bend, different story. I use 50# braid with a 20# fluorocarbon leader on a C-rig.

What type of rod and reel you working with on the third one? Length, power, and action on the rod? Gear ratio of reel?

I've used an Inception reel. I wasn't too impressed. Felt cheap. But it is their entry level model. I've heard nothing but good things about the Concept C. I'm sure the Concept Z will be a good reel. I'd give it a little time to see if there are any bugs that need to be worked out before buying one.

Three set ups I have:

7.1:1 bait caster on 7ft heavy rod (I used this yesterday with the texas rig)

6.4:1 bait caster on 7ft med/heavy rod (I used this yesterday with the jerk bait/carolina rig)

6.2:1 bait caster on 7ft med/heavy rod (this is the one i will leave the mono on for crankbaits/jerk baits/etc...

I also have a 5.2:1 spinning reel on a 7ft med/heavy pole. I don't use it much, though.

Topwater.

The two rods I always have hooked up are carolina rig and spinnerbait because those are my two favorite ways to fish. However, I have the luxury of having numerous options on my deck or in my locker so I am not as strapped on ideas. If I only had 3 rods they would be spinnerbait, texas rig and buzzbait. Then once the son came up I would replace the buzzbait with a weightless rig for wacky or senko.

I know you don't like to throw them, but that would make a good spinnerbait rod. Spinnerbait/Buzzbait/Chatterbait/Swim Jig would be good with that set up. Crankbait won't always be the best moving bait option (especially when there's lots of matted grass). So it's good to have another option.

I don't like throwing spinnerbaits either. But I do when it's the best option.

Also, I agree with Janky. A topwater set up would also be a good 3rd option. Depending on what you're throwing, that set up may not be the most ideal. But you could make it work.

I think I'm gonna go with a top water popper or a frog. Thanks for the advice, gents.

Got my reels restrung. It was 50lb test power pro I had, not 35lb. I left about half the spool with 10lb mono on both. Should be good to go now, setting the frick outta some hooks.

Janky, did you make it to Lake Martin, or did you go to henderson? I think i remember Pillage telling me you may have been going to Henderson sunday.

Question for any of yall who have an answer:
When yall launch at bayou benoit, do yall fish lake dauterive? Or yall stick to the bayou?
