Saw this on the Waterlox facebook page and thought of that big slab you have. Have you given any thought to starting a facebook page and adding new and unique wood as you get it?

I probably wouldn't use cypress for a dining table. I built a nice outdoor table out of cypress but it would probably be too soft.
Hard to beat walnut, cherry or maple for dining tables.
Pecan is great but it is very prone to warping like it's cousin hickory.

I have some slabs of wood that are over 6 feet wide and 1000 years old (all from Costa Rica).
What Kind? Wilson Cypress Co. was once the second largest cypress co. in the world, and was located here in my home town, until they relocated somewhere in South America in 1944, after they cut all the cypress out of the river swamps.
You can still walk around in those swamps and find stumpage over 12 feet in diameter.

In Houston, Clark's Hardwood is THE place to go. They have everything and lots of it.

Is legit. Went there yesterday to get some materials for a project. Definitely worth taking a look if you want something exotic.

I'm not that in tune with furniture making, but I do appreciate seeing pretty wood when I see it (damn I had second thoughts about typing that lol)
Sycamore is a very fast growing tree, around 22" per year as I recall. Wonder why it isn't used that much in furniture, or is it?

I never thought of using it.I actually wanted to build it out of pecan. The lady at the sawmill recommended it so we ended up going with it.
I can do trim and other minor stuff but that was my first venture into table making. The Kreg jig is your friend.

One of the best tools I've ever used. Don't see how people built furniture without it.

pdub, as someone that grew up in a house full of things my Dad made out of different wood over the past 70+ years, I had to tell you what a beautiful piece of furniture that is. Fantastic job.

I have. I just haven't got around to it yet and I'm dreading having to become part of Facebook. It's just not my thing.

Nice meeting you and your grandfather the other day. I hope that wood works out for you, and call me if you have any questions or problems.
