Going to be in Galveston for the next year or two, so I bought a kayak.
Anyone with tips or suggestions on bait, fishing spots, etc. The help with be appreciated for this novice yaker.

What kind of yak you got?
I always wanted to do a trip down the Guadelupe River in my yak. Wouldn't make much sense for you to drive all the way out there since you are right on the water in Galveston, but you made me think about it.

I'm in Pearland and frequently go down there to fish in my Yak.
State Park is good for a few bucks and they have dedicated launch spots for Yaks.
Texas City Dike isn't too far away and is easy to get in and out at.
If you venture down the road between Galveston and Surfside, there are a lot of places to put in on the bay side. I usually put in off Amigo Ln and head East toward San Luis Pass. Never try to Yak through or across the Pass though. I've seen so many people flip.

What about near Tiki Island?

This advice is worth repeating for anyone who isn't all that familiar with the area. The Pass is not a place to be in a kayak or swimming.

Are you living on Tiki? On the north side of Jones Lake which is the north side of Tiki, there is Highland Bayou, which is due west of Bayou Vista. There is a marsh back there with reds, flounder, and some trout. Its a far paddle across Jones, but you can drive around to HWY 6 and put in. Jones Lake has several reefs you can wade and drift for trout. On the south side of West Bay from Tiki are North and South Deer islands as well as spoil banks from the ICW.
Places not too far to drive:
1. Sportman's Road - This is south of the Deer islands and has a marsh as well as access to Confederate Reef.
2. Mosquito Island on the dike
3. GISP has good grass flats for reds. Water can get gin clear in spots
4. If someone will mother ship you need to just go a few miles down the ICW and get back in Green's Lake, Caranchua Lake, and get on the south side of the ICW spoils as there is now grass there

Never fished Tiki Island, but after reading this I may give it a shot next time.
Outside of Galveston area, if you want to travel for a day trip, I suggest Matagorda Bay. You can put in on the East Bay and drag across the marsh through the Colorado River and fish the West all in a day.
Check out Texas Kayak Fisherman forums for some good spots.

Good thread. I'm thinking about kayak fishing Galveston this summer, but I know dick about that area and coastal fishing.

i fished for the first time in that area over memorial day weekend. we stayed on bolivar/crystal beach. stingarees restaurant and marina has a boat launch that is a five minute paddle from a nice, shallow marsh or you can paddle (cautiously and quickly) straight out across the channel to some islands. be careful, it's a high traffic area for sport boats, barges, tugs, etc.
i didn't cross the ship channel but i saw two women/girls do it and on their first attempt, they had to back-paddle the frick out of those kayaks to get out of the way of a tanker.
if you do decide to cross the ferry to bolivar, don't waste your time at rollover pass. that place sucks and i wasted a morning there. i just don't understand why it's so popular. hundreds of people fishing and nobody catching.

Rollover is very tide dependent. Incoming tide is best for the bay and outgoing is best for the surf. Be in the surf as the sun cracks the horizon on a nice day and tell me it sucks. We never mess with fishing the pass along the wall. We always are either in the surf or in the bay. Many a stringer has been loaded there. If you have a genie, night fishing under lights at the wall can be very productive.

Maybe so but I was in the bay for the incoming tide for 3 1/2 hours. I didn't catch from the yak and drifted all the way out to the islands and back. I didn't see a single fish caught by any of the waders or other yakers during that time on either side. Granted, the water was pretty dirty when I was there but even with live shrimp, not one bite.

Yes, you have to be there when the water is right. This holds true for most areas though. By the way, the jack crevalle were cruising through the cut last week. That would be a ride in a yak!
