Help me decide on my next kayak. The local yak shop is selling demo models at 20% off retail right now and I'm trying to make a choice. I've narrowed their available options down to these 3 yaks:

Native Ultimate FX 12 in Hidden Oak

Wilderness Systems Commander 120 in Flint

Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game II in Brown Camo

I fish lots of different types of water (small creeks to big lakes and everything in between) and also hunt from my kayaks. Cost wise the Native and BG2 are about the same with the Commander being about $300-350 cheaper.

Ocean, but because it's the only SOT. That Wilderness is fine. I've used it a good bits. Mung's stays at my house.

I would immediately rule out the Commander 120 due to the seat. The Native and Ocean appear to have a more comfortable seat.

I'd choose the Native solely because I own a Native myself (different model) and I know first hand that their customer service is top notch.

I don't know much about the ocean kayak to offer an opinion. Your biggest factor between the ocean and the native is the sit in vs. sit on top. The native is not self-bailing while the ocean kayak is.

The seat is fantastic. I know, as my personal yak has a shitty one.

Just going by looks, I would go...

OK - like the mounting plates
Native- like how open it is
WS- don't like

I sure wouldn't have guessed my looking at it. The few "cushion on plastic" type seats I have sat on in the past were not as comfortable as the "chair" style seats. But I guess I shouldn't knock that one until I try it.

For those familiar with the original Ultimate 12, here is a comparison for the FX vs the original:

Anchor trolleys on both sides come standard, hi-lo seating option, gear tracks behind the seat, and additional padding seem like the most notable changes.

Yeah from pictures you can't tell but the seat on the Commander is quite adjustable. It's not a chair type seat like the other 2, but its WAY more comfortable than every molded-in type seat.

It's a chair suspended on two side tubes. It's really hard to get a good idea of the design without actually seeing it.

Of the three, the ocean kayak. I'd save up though and get a nicer kayak. The ones that sit inside suck when you want to fish

The Native Ultimates do not suck

Which kayak would you save up for?

Agree to disagree. The Native Ultimate 12 is probably the most versatile fishing platform of any kayak on the market. It is super stable, lightweight, and endlessly customizable. I just can't decide if it's worth the extra cheese over the commander which is very similar or if I would rather something more of the the box decked out like the Prowler BG2.

1. Native FX - best combination of comfort, cargo space, weight
2. Ocean Kayak - great seat, self-bailing, slightly more stable
3. WS Commander - like the Native, but the Native floor is better for standup fishing

Unless it's a Hobie Pro Angler, Wilderness ATAK, Jackson Big Rig or other full-featured kayak, there's absolutely NO use to save - any of these boats will do just fine. Besides, do you really want to wait past the prime fall fishing season?

SOT vs. 2 Canaks

Depends on whether you will be using in big water, or need to paddle long distances. SOT is best for those two applications. Otherwise, Canaks have more space for gear, and are more stable. Based on your stated purposes, I would go with the Commander or Ultimate.

3 great boats, but too big for river fishing, with snags and shallows. Great saltwater tournament boats though. Sounds like he doesn't need anything that complicated.

The same place I'm looking at these 3 kayaks also has a Revolution 13, a Big Rig and a Coosa HD 20% off.

I want something light, versatile and stable and the 3 I mentioned all weigh 70# or less with the seat. I often trek 1/4 mile with my yak in tow to duck hunt or fish hard to reach locations so hauling some heavy kayak that I have trouble man-handling myself doesn't appeal to me. I can easily add a depth finder to any of the 3 mentioned, and that's all the extra stuff I would want. I know the seats in all 3 are comfortable. I've logged probably 100+ hrs in an Ultimate 14.5 in all kinds of conditions and regularly fish with some folks who have a Commander and a Predator (very similar to Prowler) so I know all 3 are quality boats.

My biggest struggle right now is convincing myself that the Ultimate or the Prowler is a $300-350 better boat than the Commander.

Stand up fishing is a must for me, think you would be thankful of this in the Native Ultimate FX vs. the Commander

Also, out of the other few you just mentioned. If I'm not mistaken, that Hobie Revolution is not a stand up fish platform. I would probably own both of those Jackson Coosa HD or a Big Rig over any of the other boats mentioned so far in this thread.

The Ultimate might be, but the Prowler is not.

Have you paddled all three?
