What should I expect? Do they have long life spans? Do they shed a lot?

I know they are the official state dog of Louisiana but I'm getting one in Idaho of all places.

I'll post pics when I get him.

ETA: I've owned multiple German Shepherds, small breeds, mutts, etc. so this isn't my first rodeo. Just curious on the breed in general.

My family had one growing up. We loved that dog, Elvis. He was deaf as a door nail, but he was a great dog. He had light blue eyes, very different looking at first.

Nice my man, mine is at my feet right now.

Maybe the most versatile dog of all. Great at every type of hunting imaginable and can come in and snuggle at night. You can make them alert and a watchdog if you want, or a complete wuss depending on how you bring them up

Mine sheds a little, but not nearly as much as a lab or german Shepard.

ETA: Here is mine

I like them a lot...lifespan is about what you would expect from a med-larger dog (10-15 years). They do shed, but have short hair so it isn't terrible.

They do bark to protect their territory, but I never once had one growl or act aggressively towards a person.

Animals are a different story in that they will kick the shite out of another dog that comes into their territory...they are frequently used for wild hog hunting and I find them to be fearless against wild animals... something like a coyote that slips into your yard at night wouldn't have a chance...

I personally don't tolerate aggressive pets, and I would get another one in a heartbeat...enjoy your pup...

He's a year old. I couldn't get a pup up here.

He has a blue leopard coat with one ice blue eye and an amber one.

not a baby, but still a pup!

people will really be curious about his eyes...that is probably their most distinctive characteristic...

talking about this is making me want another one...

I saw that they can weigh up to 90 pounds. Anyone have one that big?

Are they good with little kids? What is their temperament? Can they deal with kids like goldens and labs?

I don't know about 90 but I have one that is pushing 70 pretty hard and he's one of the bigger Catahoulas I've seen. Great dogs. Excellent with the family and all white people. Mines not as colored up as the one posted but he's the perfect dog. Other than he steals food like a starving homeless man.

He's calm but has a ton of energy. I took him for a walk that turned into a run after a few seconds.

Thanks.

Trying to get him to learn that he doesn't have to follow me every time I move.
