DMR: Jubilee happening in Mississippi Sound
Thursday, July 27th 2017, 11:53 am CDT

The DMR confirmed a jubilee was happening Wednesday after scientists analyzed water samples.
More fish, crabs, and shrimp are washing ashore in Harrison County. The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources said it’s happening because a jubilee is occurring in the Mississippi Sound.
Fish and crustaceans started appearing near shore Wednesday morning. The DMR confirmed a jubilee was happening Wednesday after scientists analyzed water samples.
“A jubilee occurs when the water is extremely warm and the waters are calm with very little wind, causing the oxygen levels in shallow water to drop to lethal levels” said Matt Hill, director of MDMR’s Finfish Bureau. “This will continue as long as these conditions exist.”
DMR officials said seafood collected during the jubilee is safe to eat, but people should still use caution.
“Currently our samples don’t indicate that there are toxins present in the water, so the seafood likely is safe,” Hill said. “However, the seafood still should be handled, stored and cooked properly. Also, if any seafood is dead, and it looks like it’s been dead for awhile, it’s best not to eat it.”
Hill said people need to remember they must have the proper license to possess seafood, and all possession and size limits still apply to seafood picked up on the beach. DMR Marine Patrol officers have been walking the beach to make sure these regulations are followed.

Never heard of one in the sound. They get them on the east side of Mobile Bay quite a bit.

Yea I had heard that Mobile Bay and some place in Africa are the only places that they occur regularly.

I heard there were only two places in the world where jubilees took place and the Mississippi Sounds wasn't one of them. This may have similarities to a jubilee, but I don't think it's a true jubilee like you see in Baldwin County.

a jubilee is a jubilee
if fish and shrimp are lazily swimming around on the surface, its either a jubilee or a biblical plague. The conditions cause the jubilee, mobile bay is just more prone to those conditions hence the semi regular occurrence

This happens damn near every summer here on the MS coast and every year they argue about what to call it. Same result regardless. BUT every time I have ever tried to get down there, it's just a bunch of dead croakers and mullet left.

Dammit...I spent the whole first part of the week in that area and came home on Wednesday morning.

Is this what the rest of the world calls Hypoxia?

Hypoxia is the cause. The effect is a bunch of rednecks using whatever they can get their hands on to scoop up shrimp, crabs and fish.
