The closest range to my house is the the open to the public Uchee shooting range at the Tuskeegee National Forrest. It's pretty unspectacular with dirt burms at 50 and 100. Nothing to set targets on as any time they install anything to hang targets on it gets shot to shite and destroyed so they no longer bother trying. You will get numbskulls out there who have no idea what range etiquette or proper gun safety is. I've seen russians with a crate of fully automatic AK47's mag dumping like crazy Ivan with no particular target i mind just spraying the backstops with lead. I've seen people shoot the table in front of them and the roof above them. I've seen someone with a miss fire look straight down the end of the barrel to see if the bullet was lodged. Lots of college age kids and know it all rednecks. You will occasionally get some really knowledgable gun folks too. Going there is like playing russian roulette.

If I ever go out there it's normally during the work day at lunch. 15 minute drive there and I can spend a half hour or so shooting during lunch before heading back to work. On a weekend I much prefer driving the extra miles out to private land to shoot. But normally during the lunch hours the place will be deserted so it's a good time to go.

Today i drive up and there are 3 college age kids, 1 Mr know it gun dude. His friend Mr Limp wristing his Taurus causing it to jam, and a fairly attractive young female. In the 23 years I've lived in Auburn this was the first time I've ever seen anyone shooting in the middle of the range from the 50 yard berm. They saw my drive up. They watched me set my stuff on the table. They probably shot for another 5 minutes while I was unpacking and setting up my target.

Beretta Neos shoots pretty good. The trigger is TERRIBLE. But the dang thing shoots straight at 7 yards.

I use that range from time to time. And you are spot on about the clientele.

Yeah, I went there a couple of times. It's exactly as you describe it.

So instead of just shooting the 50 yd backstop, they walk to the 50 yd to shoot the 100 yd backstop?

Instead of shooting at 5-7 yards they walk a box to the 50 yard berm and shoot at it from 5 yards away.

Could be worse... I don't have a lot of options to shoot, and would love something like that so near my house. Nearest outdoor range I've used is a WMA about 45 mins away, and you need a truck to get to the range. They've put baffles at the shooting area for the rifles, to keep you from shooting over the berm... the effect is that you can't even see sky unless you lay prone.

The pistol range is better.

Man, that's a lot nicer than the ole Cahaba River WMA range. Plenty of sketchiness there too.

If they were the only ones there what's the problem? They wanted to shoot at under 10 yards and probably didn't have a target stand, I don't see the big deal? Given, as soon as someone showed up they should have moved immediately.

I go to turcotte a lot. Full time range safeties. No foolishness allowed and hell, I might get onto someone before RI does. Pretty nice range. Has skeet, clays, rifle, pistol, and archery.
