Ok so re powering my 2001 24' Bay Stealth. After 15 years I have never had a jack plate and really never had any problems. With the old motor I never had a big issue without and I run in a lot of shallow water, however with the old motor off now would be the time to add if I wanted.

What is the collective opinion here?

TH Marine atlas plate. I have one on my frontier and there is a reason they are on almost all new bay boats. I like it and its really quick and the pump is built on the unit.

I have a Bobs Action Jack. Love it. You can get it powder coated by the factory too.

My choice was between Bobs, Atlas and Detwiller.

I had an Detwiller plate as well and it was a good plate, manual though.

I guess my question is I've gone 15 years in my boat without one. Now is the perfect time to add one does it make sense to do so if I haven't missed one so far? Not as concerned with the best one to get more of a question to get one or not.

It absolutely makes sense. A jack plate is a lot like trim tabs. You don't think you need it until you actually have it, then you realize you wouldn't run a boat without one. It'll make your boat run much more efficiently and help you idle or step your boat out of anything the boat can float into.

eta: I've run both Atlas plates and Bob's plates. Both are fine. I have an Atlas on my skiff right now, and I'm about to buy an Atlas micro for my duck boat.
