Ivory soap for catfish

Read on here last week about using ivory soap to bait lines so I thought I would give it a try this weekend at Toledo Bend. Alternated baiting the hooks between the soap and live bait and had equal success with both.

A better test would be two lines, one with soap and one with live.

Just sayin'.

The main thing was that it kept gar off of trot lines. I don't think anyone claimed it was downright better than live bait, but it'd be interesting to see.

Please do! I would be really interested in the results. I thought about setting some lines with it last weekend, but got put to work around the house...then started drinking beer...haha it never happened.

Thats been around for many many years. And yes, it works, but crawfish is a lot cheaper out the ditch.

I'm going to alternate soap with punkin' seeds so I can catch both blues and ops.

From what I understand it's basically just a hunk of fat, but the lye repels gar. Can't see why it would be better or worse, but I'm sure you'll hear both sides of it.

re: Ivory soap for catfish
Although I've ALWAYS had better luck with using live/fresh dead bait (in particulary bait that the catfish of that area are already used to eating) catfish not only have 8 barbels that are basically long taste buds, but a lateral line (sensors arranged down the body that are constantly reading the water for food/vibration).. Soap works because of the oils that it puts out in the water...the catfish follow its trail, and being oppurtunistic, will eat it because it can't pass up a meal... I have heard that older soaps such as Octagon work better than our modern day soaps because of the higher oil content and less perfumes...Wouldn't hurt to try...

re: Ivory soap for catfish
next time I run jugs I may slide a chunk of soap up the hook and use live bait as well. Double team it.

Cat I went to school with said the soap gets in their eyes and they get pissed off and bite it. Had to be true, he's from the catfish Capitol of the world, Des Allemands.

Was by myself and only had one 250' line out. I had never tried it before and was interested in seeing first hand if it worked at all

I started the thread last week.

I don't know if it is true or not but I've always been told that the soap works better in murky water as opposed to clear water.

You can catch'em on it, but for channel cats nothing beats chicken livers.

I know this. It sure is nice being able to wash your hands with the bait when you're done as opposed to stink bait. If the difference is negligible then I ain't even considering anything else.

Bars of Ivory soap aren't very expensive FWIW.
