The Shield would be perfect if it came with a slightly lighter trigger (to avoid paying for an APEX) and had a double-stack magazine.
The trigger reset is pretty decent (the APEX trigger kit reportedly improves reset also), as are the sights. Accuracy is plenty good for a BUG.
In size, it's like shooting a Kahr P9 with a reset trigger. Which means (assuming the Shield proves to be as reliable as Yeager and others have indicated) that it should take a big share of the market away from Kahr, or force Kahr to drop their ridiculously high prices.

On the laser... I don't think they're as bad as people make them out to be. However, if you haven't learned how to shoot iron sights proficiently, you shouldn't get a laser.
Sight picture should be something similar to "co-witness" where you're lining up your sights and your red dot is a hair above the sight. It's intimidating, helpful in low light, and useful if you have to shoot unconventionally for any reason.
It's still not a priority for me and the added bulk on my gun is not worth it to me. My wife got laser grips for her j-frame as soon as she got good with the iron sights and it hasn't affected her shooting.

I agree with this.
I've got the crimson grips on my Kimber ultra carry and I don't think I've ever turned the laser on. Just bought the wife a SW bodyguard and the button to turn the laser on is too far forward to get too efficiently

So the Apex is a good way to go? Was looking online last night and it seemed like several people had filed shite down in the trigger themselves, and some did both the apex and their own gunsmithing.
I dont know if its something I could handle or if I need to find a local gunsmith to do it, but ran it by the SO last night and she was all in.

APEX has been the "gold standard" for M&P triggers for a long time.
Some folks may be capable of doing a better job using a Dremel and an icepick, but most (including me) will be far better off forking over the $$$. If they weren't worth it (or if S&W had designed a better trigger), demand for APEX kits would have dried up a long time ago.
