Is it worth buying new batteries for this drill?

Hitachi 14.4V - been great, but batteries are 5ish years old and lasting all of 4 3" screws now. Replacement batteries are at least $35 each. Is it even worth replacing them? Should I try and rebuild the batteries instead? Or, bite the bullet and just get a new setup? If a new one, any suggestions? I have an impact driver and a corded drill, just really need something to drive screws. Nothing too crazy.

For your app 35$ is worth spending if for no reason other than to give you time to research other tools. I like Makita and Dewalt if you are looking to change.

You can probably find a 14.4v combo set for around $70. Why replace the batteries for $50? You can probably find an okay 18v drill for $100
There are places that work on batteries though. No idea how much they charge because I've only ever dropped them off

Bring to Home Depot and demand new batteries

I believe Hitachi is Lowe's

I would definitely not replace those. Batteries are ridiculous.
I'd go find an 18v drill for about 100. I got lucky and found a dewalt 18v for $60 2 batteries.

Just so you understand, in most cases the older the tool the better made it is. Do what you want but I hang on to the good stuff as long as I can.

Amazon sells generic replacements. I found off brand Dewalt compatables for $20.

Go get you a rigid lithium ion set. Lifetime warranty on tool and batteries.

You tube will show you how to rebuild it for cheap. I buy a 18 volt rechargeable battery from Harbor Freight for $9.99. Take it apart and use the HF batteries to rebuild my B&D 18 volt batteries

Like Makita, Milwaukee, and Hitachi aren't?
OP, go to this website, find a reconditioned 18V combo, and maybe look around for 14.4V batteries when you get a chance or send the ones you have to be rebuilt. I got a couple of 14.4V DeWalt batteries rebuilt by Voltman a few years ago and they work better than new still.

I say yes. But when I built pools I exclusively used the Hitachi 14.4v. Had the power of an 18v, but the weight of a 12v. Mine is roughly the same age as yours. Going strong. Has held up to dirt, water, and sand nicely.
