Please wait to get a puppy until you and your wife have adequate time.

Puppies are a handful. The one advantage they have over kids is you can actually leave them to go to the store or something.

That being said, my puppy was so high maintence that my sister (who had a kid the year previous) wanted her for a week and gave her back after two days saying it was by far worse than her kid.

my wife and I just went through IVF with implantation today

Best of luck on the IVF implant! My wife and I just had an IVF baby 2.5 weeks ago. It was the second IVF we tried and several failed IUI attempts and miscarriages before. For some reason all of the nurses seemed to have a little extra pep in their step when they know a baby is an IVF baby. I'll be thinking about this and hope you update us when your wife is pregnant

Don't get a puppy if you can't spend any time with it. You can take care of it, but will you be giving it a good life if you can't spare any time?

Thank you everybody for your advice and all of the well-wishers for the IVF. In a couple of weeks, both of our schedules lighten considerably, and we'll also have had our first pregnancy test to see if the embryo stuck. I might check with the owner and see if the pup is still available at that time. If so, it'll have had a couple of extra weeks with its parents and hopefully its siblings, too. However, rest assured, I will not get the puppy if I can't give it the time it deserves.

Fenced in backyard and a 2nd pup will solve your problems. Dogs are fine to be outside during the day while you're at work and having the 2nd dog will give the pups companionship while you're gone. Get them a little doghouse to put under the back porch, food, water, and a few doggy toys and they'll be fine. For the 2-3 times a year it might be freezing cold during the day, just make alternate plans to either bring the pups to a relative's house during the day or to leave them inside and have someone stop by midday to let them out for a little while.

Seriously? Dogs pretty much love the cold. Mine was laying playing a mud puddle half the day it was cold down here. They handle it much better than we do.

You're really going to get someone to take time out of their day to let the dogs out? Just because its cold? They woukd probably rather be out there anyway. They wont freeze, especially if they have a house to get into.

We have put hay or similar into dog houses before when the temp drops, but every dog we have had just pushes it out. They dont need it.

Some do, some don't...depends on the breed. I'm not talking about sweater weather though, I'm talking like low 30's or below with rain/wind all day to make alternate plans for pups....might be 2-3 times a year. My dogs stay outside for 9-10 hours a day until I get home from work...I wouldn't leave them in 30* weather ALL day like that.

A puppy is a lot of work, but also a lot of joy. It can be a great adventure for both of you as long as you have the time and love to invest. Nothing like a puppy!

So we ended up getting one of the puppies a few weeks later, the runt. Cute as can be and a joy. She's laying next to me pooped after her longest walk to date. When I finally make an Imgur account or something, I'll post a pic.

Our first embryo with IVF did not stick. We mulled it over for a while and decided to give it one more shot. Got one more embryo and happy to report that my wife is now 13 weeks pregnant and hating every minute of the last two months or so (not happy to report the last part). She's having a ton of nausea but not vomiting, so that's a plus.

Thanks for the previous responses, figured I owed you guys an update.
