Ideal temperature and humidity for storing firearms

With summer almost here this could be useful. Per the National Firearms Museum the ideal environment for long term storage is 70deg F, 50% RH. It is important to keep temp constant if possible. Too much humidity = rust, too dry = wood starts cracking
This digital hygrometer is a good tool for monitoring your space:

You might surprised at the conditions in your safe.

I wonder how you correct humidity? Maybe put a little cup of water in there? I have a dehumidifier in mine, like I would imagine most do. I would have to think that it's drier than a bucket of sand in there.

Nope, I've fitted mine with mini-dehumidifier, two large VCI packs, and a have a digital hygrometer that isn't one of those crappy ones suitable for cigars...

Can maintain 50% RH @ 70F with a PG/DW solution that is 80.5/19.5 ratio. Unless your safe is airtight and you have a very effective desiccant you aren't going to see low RH unless you live in the desert.

RH can drop fairly low in the winter in a house with gas heat in my experience.

Saw about 55% RH up here with single digit temps and gas and kerosene heat.

My safe is about 61% right now with the humidity controller about 50% until it needs a recharge. I think those that take a gun in from cold weather into a warm house and proceed to toss them in the safe need the extra stuff for moisture control. I've never had as much as flash rust with VCI's and no humidity control though.

I like the Golden Rod to keep the temps of guns inside the safe warmer and help avoid condensation. You are correct that bringing a cold gun into a warm house is a real concern, and many people don't think about the 'hidden' surfaces that can rust during such a dramatic temp change.

Do you use a descant along with the heater?

If needed. Sometimes dessicant can get the RH a little too low during the winter.
