I want an AR type gun

I have no idea about this stuff, so take it easy. I have pistols and shotguns. I have no idea in the difference between an AR, M4, AK, etc. What is best for home defense and shooting shite on the farm?

Just get a basic model from any of the major manufacturers. Colt LE 6920, S&W M&P15, Rock River CAR A4 (Mid-length option), Stag Model 1, DPMS AP4, etc. Good, solid platforms to work with if you decide to customize later and all have flat top receivers for optics.

Colt 6920 can be had for $850.
If you want a rail, I'd go with a BCM for $1100.

Get this. Great entry level AR at a good price.

I have an AR-15 but I'm leaning on getting an AR-10 as well.

OB have any recommendations in the $1000-$1500 range? TIA.

Academy's website is down. Might be completely unrelated, but I bet a lot of others are also looking for an AR right now. Buy ammo while you are looking, buy more after you make your purchase & buy even more if you happen to lose it in a body of water.

1000 to 1500. I'd look heavily at BCM and Daniel Defense.

ya BCM and daniel defense. or you could build a pretty nice one for that much

Can't go wrong with Colt or any of the main options out there.

I said in my post I am ignorant to the differences. Why be flippant?

There are books written on the differences just among the AR-type firearms. It basically comes down to two basic configurations (full length "rifle" and shorter "carbine") and three lengths of gas system (rifle, mid-length, carbine) keeping to non-NFA types and non-application specific versions. Not going to bother with piston-type AR's, there's no value added in them, especially for a beginner. Carbine-style (M4-like) AR's are probably what you've seen the most of and pretty much will do 95% of what you are looking for right now. That means 16" barrel, collapsible buttstock, shortened foregrip:
I'm guessing this is the style you are thinking about since you mentioned home defense. Pretty much everyone does a good version of this type of AR and it mostly comes down to price.
Your basic challenge is going to come down to if you plan on adding optics. If you know you will add glass then you might want to go ahead and opt for something like the "optics ready" rifles that will come without a carry handle and a railed front sight base. Smith and Wesson has the M&P15 Tactical which has a railed foregrip and comes with flip-up iron sights (some refer to them as BUIS or Back-Up Iron Sights). That package will give you something you can shoot right away and give you the most flexibility in installing an optic without changing anything on the rifle. You'll pay a little more for the convenience but not much.

I understand wanting an ar style rifle for recreational and hunting purposes but you may want to reconsider using one for home defense. Especially if you have other people in your home. A home defense shotgun or really any shotgun would be much better for home defense. My home defense gun is a youth model semi auto 20ga loaded with 3" #3 steel shot. Youth model so I can easily swing it indoors. I also keep a handgun close in case someone isn't dead after 3 shots and I can't get to my ammo in time. Just consider the over penetration. Sheetrock isn't hard for a bullet to go through. S&w makes a damn good ar style rifle as well. Had one chambered in 300 blackout that never gave me a problem and was extremely accurate.

A 5.56 hardball round will penetrate through fewer layers of drywall than even a handgun round.
But I would advise using a different round if defending the home. I have mine loaded with Hornady Vmax, which will penetrate even fewer layers of drywall and has 100% energy transfer. Speer also makes a Gold Dot round for the AR that is quite effective.

Someone posted a link for a stupid sale a few weeks back on Gold Dot - I think I bought 10 boxes for $100.
And, Bap - you may be happy to know that I've evolved from my more old-fashioned (and unscientific) notion of recommending defending the home with shotguns and birdshot and now am more closely aligned with your position:
The AR-15 is the best all around defense weapon for 90%+ situations.

This video may alter your perception of commonly held beliefs about drywall.

I knew you'd come around!
But I agree. It's quite an effective platform for almost anyone.
