I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?"...

Well to tell you the truth in all this excitement I kinda lost track myself. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and would blow your head clean off, you've gotta ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?

My new Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Mag Stainless!!!

I've always wanted one and decided with the upcoming archery elk hunt in Colorado this year, might as well get one now for bear protection.

Bonus Pic: A little slice of Americana...

It sucks.

It's more of a hard shove to your shoulders.

I have not shot it yet as I've been pretty busy but will def get to it this weekend. Im actually pretty excited to feel the thunder. I want to see what it has. I have never been recoil sensitive and Im a bigger guy but I also dont want to underestimate it either. Was checking out some Buffalo Bore 340 grain +P+ loads for bear protection. Im sure that'll pack a wallop but I cant wait. Just bought a box of American Eagle 240 grain standard loads because that's all the store I transferred it through had.

My best description is that it's like a 12 ga. shotgun in pistol form.

They are great guns. I had a 7.5 inch Blackhawk. Still pissed off that I traded it. Will have another at some point.

About like having a bomb go off in your hand.

It can be pretty brutal if the gun isn't heavy enough. Those ruger single actions are heavy and aren't that bad.

I was surprised at the heft. It just feels like a great, well crafted, well balanced firearm. It weighs approx 1 metric shite ton.

Super Blackhawk - 45 oz
S&W Model 629 - 41.5 oz
S.A. Range Officer 1911 .45 ACP - 40 oz
and for fun...
Desert Eagle 50 AE - 72 oz

I had an anaconda with the magna-ported barrel back when I still owned guns. It gave you a pleasant shove. Recoil came straight back, rather than up. It was heavy, but well balanced and easy to keep on target.

How would you comepare it to a .357 mag

If shooting a 6" Blackhawk .357 were like shooting a 20 gauge with dove loads, a 6" Blackhawk .44 mag would be like shooting a 12 gauge with turkey loads. It's substantially more recoil. im not sure what the exact numbers are, but I bet it's more than twice as much recoil.

It's very much controllable in a gun sized for it, but it's stiff. The muzzle blast is more impressive than the recoil. You can kill shite with the kaboom.

I guess I would compare it about like a .30-30 (.357) vs a .300 win mag (.44)

I have a GP100 4" and really don't think it has much recoil. I might think differently in a lighter shorter barreled gun.

According to Buffalo Bore ballistics charts

.357 Mag 180 grain out of 5" barrel
Muzzle Velocity = 1398 fps
Muzzle Energy = 783.2 ft/lbs

.44 Mag 240 grain (+P Deer Grenade) out of 5.50" barrel
Muzzle Velocity = 1578 fps
Muzzle Energy = 1364 ft/lbs

I know not apples to apples but it appears that Buffalo Bore doesnt make a "standard" .44 mag load

This is rather impressive:
Buffalo Bore Heavy .44 Mag +P+ 340 grain (frick yea) out of 5.50" barrel
Muzzle Velocity = 1401 fps
Muzzle Energy = 1479 ft/lbs
That's insane. I think I found my bear load.

To compare to 9mm - A popular self defense round.
Federal Hydra-Shok 124 grain JHP
Muzzle Velocity = 1120 fps
Muzzle Energy = 345 ft/lbs
