I have a couple of these (4500 and 6500). They are really good reels and you could use them for catfish as well.

Put 65lbs braid and you will be able catch anything that swims. Also, with the thinner diameter braid you will be able to use lighter weights.

Its about 55 miles to the ledge over there. Used to fish over there for King tournaments. Carry your bass gear and some shad rigs in case you hit a rip. I have caught a ton of chickens over there. Get a Hilton's book that has the structures for starters, not much structure compared to LA waters. Don't overlook the ship channel!

What do you guys think about Okuma, Offshore Angler from BPS, and Shimano combos or separates?

They are considerably cheaper and I woudl suspect not as durable but for the occasional trip (once every 1-2 yrs) would they be worth it?

You are looking at hundreds of dollars just for a basic offshore setup

My budget is 400 or less for a rod, reel, line, leaders, and terminal tackle. I think I can accomplish this.

Shimano is great for rods or reels, although I prefer the Penn stuff I mentioned in previous posts vs Shimano stuff at similar price point. I would tend to stay away from Okuma. BPS makes good rods, but I don't trust their reels.

I will reiterate, for what you described, a good offshore class spinning reel (max drag at least 15#, preferably 20#, live bait feature preferred but not necessary, 300yd 65# braid line capacity) and a freestyle jigging rod (fast taper, graphite construction) in the 50-80lb range is what I would buy. It will catch everything from chicken dolphin to 100lb tuna. Only thing it really can't do it troll, and I have even done that with it in a pinch.

Rod, reel, line leaders and terminal tackle should set you back right at $400.

Hah. Good question. She wants to do work with kids, but not likely general peds. Right now she is leaning towards peds gastro, peds anthesiology, or maybe neonatal.

I'm pushing for peds gastro, but we shall see. Lifestyle is definitely high on our priority list. My brother in law wants her to do rad-onc (that's what he is) and while the pay and lifestyle is great, she just has no interest in it.

You have to have intrest in your field to be good at it but at the end of multiple consecutive 80 hour weeks, the pay and lifestyle issues make you realize to a large degree work is work.
