Same group still hanging on up here in NY. Pulled the feeder a week ago but they are still hitting up wildflowers and checking back for feeder in the am. Pending cold front this weekend I suspect I have seen the last of them until next may.

My understanding is you should pick your feeders up after the first weekend in October so you don't hold up their migration because they'll try to stay longer than they should if you don't. Could just be a myth though..

Myth. Their instinct to migrate will take them south irrespective of the status of your feeder.

Yes that's a myth. Very very few neotropical migrants stay back. You can leave your feeders up in the winter and possibly catch a rare western species of hummingbird.

My grandmother used to tell us that hummingbirds rode on the backs of geese!

Had a lady in a flower shop tell me that a couple of years ago. It amazes me the things people will accept as fact without any scrutiny whatsoever.

Here in Blanchard, we have had them at our feeder for the past 3-4 weeks.

Do you know they don't for sure?

They migrate at different times. Birds are across the gulf chilling in South America by the time the geese leave canada

They could do it at night and then fly back.

Not having made the assertion, I don't labor under the burden of feeling that I need to disprove it. But, hey, show me some evidence if you have it.

On the other hand, knowing that the myth really states that Hummingbirds migrate on the backs of geese and that the basic migration patterns of these two birds don't allow for that, I feel very safe in discounting it as the stupidity that it is.

People do believe it, but there are many things that people believe that are unsupported by any evidence.

Fair enough, I kind of suspected that too which is why I said it was just something I heard.

I have actually seen hummingbirds freeload geese in flight though. They sell a harness just for this at Academy so that is definitely true...

I'm so glad somebody noticed. It's my favorite myth, and it's a little hard to see in the tiny avi.

"This is the time of year when the tiny hummingbird selects its goose to make the arduous journey across the Gulf of Mexico to Central America." Read in a David Attenborough voice or something. It's so dumb.

Dang, they select? Makes me think of the Avatar flying dragon thing.
