When do they start showing up around Shreveport? I saw one today and didn't know if they are starting to show up or leaving. How long do they stick around? I'm thinking of going to get some feeders but wanted to be sure they'd be around for awhile before I do.
Pretty obvious I'm not an avid bird watcher. TIA

Id imagine you are on the backside or middle of the big buildup.

About 10 days ago I had a bunch, now not but 4-5 of em...could be because I have some mean males that just wont let anybody eat. I put one feeder in the front of the house. I had so many females trying to feed at the alarm company sign I felt bad.

Hummingbirds leave?

I don't see them year round. My understanding is they migrate. I could be wrong.

They are neotropical migrants. Spend summer here and winter in South America. Technically summer there also

My mom lives in Waskom and I was there last weekend and she had about 50 tearing up her feeders.

In N MS the numbers are way down as of Monday. Prior to Monday and the 10 -12 days before the hummingbirds were consuming about 32-40 ozs a day of sugar water from my 3 feeders. After Monday less than 8 ozs.

The last of them, except for an occasional straggler, will be gone from Shreveport within the next 10 days. Next year, make sure you have your feeders out by April 1, or if you want to hit the soutward migration, put them out by August 25th or so.

they are migrating through on their way back to south America for the winter...put a feeder up and see what shows up...but don't wait too long or they'll be all gone until next spring!

I'm in Houston and think we're on the back end of the migration. I've got 3 feeders and the most aggressive male ever patrolling my feeders. I went from him defending every feeder against 5-10 last week to just him against a few invaders this week. I've never seen one bird be able to ward off birds from multiple feeders that are 20' apart like this one does.

My understanding is you should pick your feeders up after the first weekend in October so you don't hold up their migration because they'll try to stay longer than they should if you don't. Could just be a myth though...

Lol that's what I was thinking. You know those little suckers are worn slap out when the get there. They don't glide like other birds.

Amazing creatures.

Houston area person here responding. Shreveport probably not much different than Houston in terms of weather.

Hummingbirds, in my experience, really start to disappear with the first cold snap. That is historically about mid October in our areas. Last year was a much warmer winter. First real cold snap did not happen until late October, and it was really not that much of a cold front.

Sure, many are just "passing through" right now. But many more will follow and stay many days.

In all, that gives you 2 - 5 weeks to enjoy the fall migration. The birds will go at least to south Mexico or Central America (not necessarily all the way to South America - but some do in January or February).

Yes, they are super migrators. What has always fascinated me is that many of them do not (absolutely do not) rely on land to roost every night during their migration south.

Many cross the Gulf of Mexico nonstop (for instance, from Mobile, Alabama to the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico). Wow. That's why they try to mega fatten up with nonstop feeding of sugar water before departing. Your feeders may be a part of their action!

Love hummers. I am sure you will too.

I'm in Shreveport. Had a bunch up until about a week ago. Starting to dwindle fast.
