How important is cover scent while deer hunting?

I've got friends that will not enter the woods without at least putting cover scent on their boots, and I've got other friends who have never struggled without using it at all.

I usually wash all of my camo in scent eliminating detergent... but rarely put cover scent on. I am considering starting using it... if for no other reason than to give me peace of mind while hunting.

Do you guys use cover scent? If so, what is the most effective brand that you have used?

Depends on what type of stand you are hunting, what type of weapon(Bow, Rifle, Knife-lol), and wind direction.

I've never used it, and I see just as many deer as everyone else on our property.

I never use it. I think its silly to believe that deer can't smell our human scent because it's covered up by a stronger and usually chemically made "cover scent". A deers olfactory system is too good not to be able to decipher between one scent to another. I also don't want a strong cover scent drawing attention to my own scent that is in the same scent trail. I've never wasted my money on cover scents and have never thought about your idea, but it makes perfect sense.

the most important thing about deer hunting is wind direction-u can wear what u want but if the wind is not right the deer will smell you.

While I agree that a deer has the ability to decipher even minute traces of human scent, I do as much as possible to reduce that scent and cover with something.

I wash all clothes in scent free detergent and store in xxl 20 gal zip locks, I tuck pants in my boots, and I wear 18" high rubber boots.

I bath with scent free shampoo and soap, use the scent free deoderant, and towel off with a towel that has been through the scent free wash.

When dressing, after base layer is on, I spray down with unscented scent killer, then put on outer layers. Boots get sprayed totally including soles. After arriving at lease and grabbing my gear I spray down again with the unscented spray.

For cover scent I spray cuffs of sleeves, collar of shirt, and cuffs of pants and boots with Fresh Earth by Hunters specialty.

If there is standing water or mud puddles, I make a point of stepping in them and getting my boots pretty muddy before walking to the stand. If I am hunting an area with cows, I simply look for a semi fresh pile of cowshit. Pre rut I will put a small amount of doe estrus on the toe of one boot. If it has been really dry or post rut I will either use a very little bit of red fox urine on both boots or grind goat weed into my soles prior to walking to the stand.

I dont touch vegitaiton with my bare hands on the way in to stands either.

Once in my stand I will occasionally use 1-2 sprays of the Fresh Earth scent around my collar or hat, especially if I have to open the collar or break down to base layer due to changing temps.

After a hunt, I will rewash base layers but will hunt in outer layers again if I did not sweat much. They get sprayed down with unscented spray inside and out and stored in a separate bag with a fresh earth wafer after beign worn once though.

My boots get sprayed inside and out after each hunt also.

I mostly bow hunt but still try to do this for rifle hunting also.

I always try to use the wind but as every hunter knows, the wind changes, and deer movement isnt 100% predictable. I have had deer approach from behind me passing only 10 ft away with the wind blowing 10 mph in my face with my scent control efforts so I will continue to follw them.

I tired coon urine and found it scared deer and it stunk too bad for me to tolerate it.

35 min from bed to stand. 20 min from bed to duck blind.

It is ok to be jealous.

How far is your stand from where you park? It takes me at least 15mins to walk to my stand.

For deer it varies by the stand I'm going into (100-1000 yd) but usually less than 500 yards. (on long walk days it may take me an additional 10-15 min.)

For ducks about 50 yards.

FWIW it took longer to type the process than it actually does to go through with it. I wake shower and get dressed and add a few sprays, then get there and add a few more and make sure to step in/on the right stuff on the way to the stand.

I saw over 50 deer last weekend while smoking cigarettes and drinking beer in the stand.
