I normally don't do much other than put a tag with a lite amount of oil down the barrel and a little oil on the rails (on a pistol) and go shoot it. First time I will normally put about 100 through it and the bring it back and clean it really good. Run a brush in the barrel quite a few times and then a patch until it's clean.

Am I doing anything wrong and what do you do?

Remove from box, load, shoot, "lose it in a boating accident".

I have 2 brand new pistols and the owner's manual says they are delivered preserved with a protective grease and oil coating and must be stripped before firing the first time. The protective grease and oil should be removed and the pistol then relubricated.

I've honestly never done anything other than put bullets in and fired away. I also don't own any semi-automatic pistols other than a cheap Lorcin .25.

Are you worried about getting the rings properly seated or something?

Didn't figure you for a low-level gangbanger

What rings?

Nah, just wondering if anyone has a more thorough process.

Wipe the factory oil off, a drop or two of my own, and shoot. Clean after I'm done, oil wear points, wipe down, and shoot until it gets very dirty

I agree with the others.

Remove the factory grease and then fire away. Most modern handguns don't need much lubrication so go light on re-oiling the slide.

By the way, what kind of handgun is it?

owner's manual
guns come with manuals? (the only manual I ever read was the one that came with my AR)

To the OP- I shoot 'em straight out the box then change the breakin oil after 8 hours- just like a new mower.

What caliber is that p320? How's it fit your hand? What size grips?

It's the carry 9mm

I love it so far. I have big hands and it fits very well. It might be the most accurate pistol I own.
