At Wal Marks, and they have a spinning reel/pole combo with 12lb test for $20. My youth group is headed to Panama city next weekend. Thinking $20 per rig wouldn't be bad for just knocking around for three days on the beach. Is it a total waste?

Edit: I have been reading some of the threads around here regarding beach/pier/jetti fishing. Want to make sure I have the right stuff, and ideas, to at least get enough fish for a meal.

From Beach: Bait with Shrimp, Squid, or Mullet. Then walk it out past the surf and throw it in by hand. Do I need any kind of weight/buoyancy? Should I put a sleeve on the end of the line so the fish doesn't cut through it? Bury the end of the pole in the sand while throwing the bait? Or do I need to buy some pvc, and shove it into the beach to use as a rod holder?

From Pier/Jetti: Use spider/sputnik weights, and bait with Shrimp, Squid, or Mullet. Maybe even a gold spoon? Let line sink to bottom, reel a few times then bounce the line up and down like im crappie fishing under a bridge???

How are off am I? Did I even come close to understanding what everyone was saying correctly? I gleaned all of these tidbits from a myriad of threads. Want to make sure I compiled everything right.

Thanks guys.

Sounds like a good deal for what you're doing. Prolly have to throw it out the window on the way back, but if it catches a fish or two it's worth 20.

If you can find a Zebco right for the same price, they're quality seems to be slightly better.

If I were buying it to fish on a lake/river/creek I would have done the Zebco, and it was only $12. But this will be from the beach or jetti, and maybe the pier. It's a larger, 2 handed rod, and bigger reel. Didn't have a Zebco that size for less than $50.

I was gonna follow what I've read in here the past few days. Never fished from the beach. Really haven't fished that much at all.

Ive always hated it, but went to Lake Guntersville last week and really enjoyed it.

Caught this in the first 10 minutes with a surface swim bait, in open water.

7lb Channel Cat.

I actually had a Shakespeare rod and reel from WalMart that lasted for about 15 years, which is when it burned up in a fire. For the money, they are great little rigs.

I would absolutely buy that for what you are going to be doing...

just remember, everything in salt water has teeth, so no picking the fish up by the lower lip, like you would a bass...

My 2 cents: don't overthink surf or pier fishing. Depending on tide movement and waves pick your weight. I'd go 3/4 oz or 1oz if it's ripping. Throw your bait (mullet, shrimp, etc...) out and let it sit. Reel in from time to time so there isn't a ton of slack. That's about it. Relax till you get bit and if you do happen to hook a nice fish, consider it icing on the cake.
