Horsefly trap that appears to slay them in record numbers

I've got a pool in the backyard and these spawns of Satan can be pretty bad at times. Might look into building one of these if they're bad again this year. Full disclosure, this is a Facebook link, but just look at all those dead horseflies!

Dude is laying waste to the local horsefly population

maybe but wonder if it really makes a dent in the grand scheme of things.

probably not in the grand scheme, but I bet that dude is a lot happier by his pool. Looks like those horseflys were tearing their asses UP!

God bless him. I wonder how it would work on those evil bastards on the coast. I don't even know the proper name for them. Deer flies? Marsh flies? Most persistent biters on earth.

I wonder if we could design a small, hat-mounted version?

I guess the soap makes a big difference. When I'm swimming in my pool and swat them they can go underwater then come back up and fly away.

Dish detergent will kill the hell out of insects. Next time you have a wasp nest around the house, instead of getting a cup full of gas, like all decent rednecks have done for eternity, get a cup of warm water and squirt some dish soap in it. Drops them just like gas. They might wiggle their legs more than with gas, but they fall just as fast.

Most insects breathe through their outer shell/skin. Ants, wasps, flys, horseflys, fleas, and others are easily killed by soapy water because it coats their body and suffocates them.
Next time you encounter a wasp nest just put about 1/3 of cup dishwashing liquid and 2-3 cups water in a Sonic Route 44 cup (or other very large cup). Add water first and then the dishwashing liquid while gently stirring. You want it to mix well without causing a lot of suds. Splash the whole thing on the nest and they will hit the ground.

can't believe this guy counted 1700 flies over the week. like hundreds every day wasn't good enough.

I'm guessing he's an engineer.

There is a much easier way. Get a dark colored beach ball (blue will work fine), hang it from a string and cover the top half of it with Tanglefoot. Depending on the number of horseflies you get, you may need extra beach balls.

I had one of these set up on my land. I had to empty the jar every other day.
