I think I could have easily. I would have figured that's the only way to save anyone. Stay and both die. leave and possibly both live.

Terrible story. I'd be pretty scared to head out in the Gulf overnight when the water is cold.

quote:

Suddenly, Coen noticed the 30-foot Scarab was filling with water.

Henderson started four bilge pumps. Water sprayed everywhere. Coen quickly unhooked the boat from one of the many oil rigs in area where they had been fishing. Henderson revved an engine, but it died. Frantic, he got both motors roaring — only to have the saltwater that had leaked in kill them quickly. Bow to the wind, it was clear any wave could flip them.

Are they missing part of the story here? Sounds like they went under right next to a rig. Is there a reason they couldn't hang on to the rig they were tied to?

Their biggest mistake was untying from that platform.

But seriously, it's a real tragedy and a tough call to have to make.

that's the truth. even if there's nothing to sustain you, you are out of the water.

Terrible tragedy. Prayers to that poor family.

30 foot boat out of cell range should always have a functioning EPIRB.

If it came down to where he was hindering my ability to save us then I'd have to seperate and pray he made it until I could send help. But I'd probably struggle convincing myself it was the only option.

I agree that would be a tough situation. It's a shame that it's so easily avoidable.

All of you outdoorsman really need to look into the Spot Tracker system. $100 a year for safety and piece of mind is well worth it. I use one when kayaking and pay the $50 extra for the live tracking feature.

You can push a button and it send your gps coordinates to friends. You can tell them you are OK or that you need help or you can push a button that provides your exact location to the international geo-rescue station.

It's water proof and operates off AAA batteries. Smaller than a cell phone. No reason not to have one if you outdoors in remote locations. It is satellite based so cell coverage is never an issue.

Yea something don't makes sense. Why would you untie from a platform if your boat is sinking?
