Hornady American Whitetail Ammo

Anybody tried the new American Whitetail ammo. I'm getting a 25-06 this week and was thinking about trying this ammo out.

Can't help you with the ammo selection, but every review I've seen on the 25-06 is most excellent. I think you have yourself a damn fine caliber.

What model are you buying?

Marlin xl7, I used a buddy's on a hunt this year. Was happy with it, killed a doe. Wanted another rifle as a back up to the Browning 7mm. I have read a lot of good reviews on the gun and for the price it's well worth getting.

Does it have a bottom drop/ hinged floor plate for shell removal out of the magazine, ALA the 700 BDL? I am looking for a new rifle and this is a requirement for me. I don't want to keep up with a detachable magazine and will not buy a new rifle to bolt every round out of the magazine.

re: Hornady American Whitetail Ammo
What kind of numbers does a 25-06 make?

Grain, velocity, energy?

re: Hornady American Whitetail Ammo
The cartridge is capable of propelling a 117 grain (7.6 g) bullet at up to 3200 feet per second (980 m/s) and energy levels up to 2,500 ft·lbf (3,400 J).

Copies from wiki.

To unload you have to use the bolt.

I'll tell you this. 125gr Nosler Ballistic tips will stomp a whitetail down like you hit him with a train at 3200 fps. Even if you hit him too far back.

Hugo posted the numbers but I will combine this post.

I am not all that impressed by those numbers, to be honest. Well, for a whitetail, its a perfect round. However, my 165 gain Barnes moves over 3,100 fps but has a muzzle energy of over 3,500. I can use it on cayotes to moose.

No doubt, but for a southern whitetail, that's almost too much weight.

re: Hornady American Whitetail Ammo
I agree that its on the high end. But I get stupid great groups with it and am sitting on a little over 100 round of it. I dont want to drop down to 150 grain for another season or so. At over $3 a bullet, its hard to throw them on the "one day Ill find you again" shelf.

Oh no doubt. Perfection is about 167 grains as far as ballistic coefficient.

You get one at that weight and shape that's able to do terminal ballistics well enough and you've got the holy grail.
