Homemade Smoker

Anyone ever made their own cheap smoker? I've seen it done on a cooking show using a hot plate, some aluminum foil, a cooling rack, and a cardboard box. I'm saving up for a Kamado grill and don't really want to buy a crappy pit in the mean time. I feel like smoking something over the weekend. Seems like an easy and cheap way to get it done for around $30.
Or I might just get creative and make a nicer wooden one.

Here's the last one I made to carry me over until I finish my large, stainless one, but I guess it depends on what you call cheap . . .
But making a smoker out of flammable materials is a completely different type of project imo.

From what I've read, as long as you put a pan to catch any drippings, it's perfectly safe. Or, you can have a separate "smoke box" with a cheap dryer vent duct to transfer the smoke to the meat box. Then you really have no issue with flaming up. Only need to keep the heat around 225 F, so no real chance of the boxes randomly catching fire. I have a crap ton of moving boxes and the only real thing I'll have to buy is a $12 hot plate and maybe a thermometer (I've got one, but I'm thinking of one for the meat and one for the box temperature). It's kind of a fun project as much as it is about cooking the meat. Although I may take a look around at some of the random objects I have around the house that could possibly be turned into a smoker.

My dad and his buddies would go find an old refrigerator and convert it into a smoker. Most people were just looking to get rid of them when they stopped working, so usually they were free. Here's a video on converting one: LINK

Alton Brown is where I got the original idea for the box smoker. The appealing thing about that one is that I can literally throw it away and it isn't taking up too much space in the garage. But the ceramic pot smoker does seem like a good idea. We've used clay pots to cook prime rib in the oven in the past. Keeps the heat very consistent. Might be worth a shot and hell, may even nullify needing a Kamado

a metal garbage can
Hope it's not a galvanized garbage can because galvanized is a big no-no
Eta: just clicked the link and looks like galvanized. I would use a cardboard box before one of those cans

I can't imagine maintaining a good constant heat would be easy in a cardboard box..make sure rain isn't in the forecast...

I was gonna say I saw that type of smoker on Good Eats. He did an awesome piece of meat with a cardboard box. Alton Brown is must see TV for me and my house.

Get a filing cabinet and a hot plate and an old black iron skillet.

I built a UDS (Ugly Drum Smoker) like this one and it is awesome! There are people cooking with them in cooking competitions now because they do so good. Just google it and you can see how to make one

Metal trash can, can of high temp spray paint to coat inside and out. 4 S hooks to hold a grill rack. A hot plate and a skillet for wood chips.
