Hiking boots for mule deer hunt

Continuation from my pack question. I need some hiking boots for the trip to New Mexico but I keep seeing forum threads on people with weak ankles. I do not have weak ankles as I lift heavy and have never needed it. What do I look for or can I find something that is not super expensive like crispi? I do want waterproof and I’ll use gaiters as needed.

I have Rocky pac boots. Rubber lowers and denier uppers. Waterproof and 400 gram thinsolate. Half size bigger than I normally wear for extra socks. Work great !

I wore my Georgia Giant work boots.

I used Oboz hiking boots for a trip in Wyoming - I now use 'em all the time.

What part of New Mexico and what time of year. I went last year to the southern part of the gila in early bow season i got uninsulated La sportiva’s and they worked fine- it was really hot. Whatever you get you need to break them before you go or your trip will be miserable.

I was going to suggest crispi. You can catch them on sale for $200-$240 depending on model. I have bad ankles and wear 11” miendls if in nasty terrain. If you are cheap, watch Facebook and Craigslist in the Pacific Northwest for some. They pop up all the time and usually new or barely worn.

You can also deal with bad feet a few days into your hunt.
Your call.

Check out Keen. Looks like they are having a sale on their website. I have a pair and am very happy with them.

I will second the Danner Pronghorn. Most comfortable and durable leather boot I have come across for the money. They feel broken in straight out of the box, and well constructed. I have been through two pairs in the past ten years, and only reason I bought another was the gore tex liner wearing out.

Both Merrell and Salomon make gore tex lined boots that come below the ankle. I use Merrell hunting elk in Colorado on the warmer days, they are very comfortable.

I’ve worn camouflaged crocs the last 2 years.

how far are you planning on walking? If not a great distance, I just wear something you are already comfortable in.

Danner pronghorn
I've worn Pronghorns occasionally to and from my stand over the last few years. They have an eye rivet on the left boot that presses into my ankle after a while so I don't recommend for hiking. I returned a pair of Danner Steel Yard work boots because the same rivet issue was unbearable for a full work day. They will also squeak like basketball shoes when you walk in damp grass and leaves.

I wore Nike combat boots in Montana and they did fine.

I purchased some Danner Pronghorns last year. After breaking them in I put about 50 miles on them in Missouri. They were comfortable as all hell and feel pretty durable. These are the 400 g primaloft version, I plan on getting some uninsulated ones soon.

I have a pie of these in their snake boots. Worn them for 5 years now. I have a pair of insulated boots, but the Irish Setters are so comfortable I end up wearing those just about every time I’m in the woods.
