I'd love one. But my 'to-buy' list for the new house keeps growing and trying to cut costs where I can, not at the cost of something quality though. I have a chainsaw that you guys would laugh at, but it was the only thing I could find 2 days after Katrina hit. I've never really needed anything more than it, until now. I've used it a little at our lot, but it's just a pain more than anything.

A couple of us have mentioned the best of both worlds in regards to price/quality. Echo. Call around some Home Depots within driving distance and find a refurbished one. They are usually $100-$200 cheaper than brand new, less than 1 year old, and they still come with a 1 year warranty from HD. This is what I did, and I got a great saw, CS-400 18' Bar Echo, for less than $200. Normally $300+ at retail.

Problems with Sunshine? Which store? I work out of Baton Rouge.

What happens when it breaks? Are equipment shops gonna be stocking Echo saw parts?
OP, get that 170, some bar oil, some 2 cycle oil, a sharpening kit, and an extra chain. Should be under $250 out the door and you'll be set

Thanks everyone. But I think I've made my decision. MS 170 is looking like my next saw.

Don't forget to get that extra stuff I posted. Stihl 2 cycle oil and bar oil is some of the best. Don't get any of that organic crap, just get the stuff in the orange bottles.
Those sharpening kits are pretty handy. They have guides that set the file at the correct angles so you can't mess it up. The saw should be peeling off little strips of wood, not creating dust.
Make sure your chain doesn't hang off of the bar, but also don't put it too tight because it will bog down. Adjusted correctly, it will keep the chain from spinning while the saw is idling. Ask the shop to show you what's right.
Get them to adjust the bar oiler correctly. It should just barely be spitting out oil when you aren't cutting something. Set up properly with stock Stihl stuff, you'll run out of fuel with a little bit of bar oil left so you can fill both at the same time.
If you don't have one, get a wedge to stop your saw from getting pinched when you are cutting stuff on the ground.
Please don't use ethanol gas, and those things of oil mix come in 1gal, 2gal, 2.5gal, and 5gal sizes. Just pour it in and fill with gas
Get a bar sheath. I think they have them in 14 and 16" sizes. A box is kinda pointless unless it is free
Eta: Wear steel toed boots when you are cutting. Honestly, the only other safety stuff I've worn was sunglasses.

Plastic wedges are money.
I don't even bother sharpening chains for my little saw. I just buy a new one. At $13 I have a hard time making myself sharpen it.
I never can get those low kickback chains sharp like they need to be anyway. I can sharpen the piss out of a normal RS, but those green box things are too cheap for me to bother fighting it. I can never get them close to as sharp as they are new. A dull low kick chain is a horrible thing

I/we've always used that RM stuff along with the RS, half skip for bars bigger than 28", and full skip for 36" and bigger. Used those Rollomatic ES bars on everything. Seems to be the best combo of durability and speed that I have used.
Oregon chains are okay, but I think their bars are too soft and have to be cleaned up more often and the oilers need to be turned up more so they don't get hot

I know of 6 shops within 60 miles of my house that do. Closest one is about 7 miles, and I live in a very rural area.
