I personally don't give a damn for a deer rifle. Give me mil-dots for anything involving shooting over 300 yards.

Leopuld, Swaro, Nikon, Zeiss. Not in that order but all are worth checking out.
If you can wait till November, I bought my Swaro Z3 4-12x50 with BRX reticle for cheap. It was on Dicks sporting goods website and they ran a 25% sale on cyber Monday or whatever it's called. Paid right under $800 after taxes.
Still a bit more than the others that were mentioned but a bit better. Or you could try and get one of the others for 25% off as well. However, they have a very limited selection and there is no guarantee that they will offer the 25% again.
Edited to add: I have used Buckmasters on 2 previous rifles and love them. One is a 06 and the other is a Rem 7mm. No complaints about the scopes at all.

i have the VX-III 4.5x14, and I think I would go with the Zeiss if I could do it all over again. I spent $500 or so and the Zeiss was more like $600+. I think Zeiss has a little bit better glass.

I got the Zeiss after consulting the OB. I really like it. Clearer than the Nikon. Did not consider the Leupold (not hating).
Leupold VX-III (older) and VX-3(newer)are different scopes if you are looking to buy from someone...
Edit: I looked at specs like light transmission when making my decision.

You can get a Zeiss Conquest for that much. Nothing better than that in that price range IMO.
