You can buy an apple laptop with better components for half that. Manufacturers have learned that people are idiots.

Meh, that's not really the best comparison.
The components in these units are more "heavy duty" if you will. Made to withstand high temps and non-ideal operating conditions. Are they still over priced? Probably, but you won't get the functionality of these units using a laptop.
