Having an issue with the steering of my 2008 skeeter/150 yamaha

Anyone know of any other reasons that my steering is really hard on my 2008 skeeter/ Yamaha 150 outboard other than bad cables? I'm hoping to not have to replace the cables. Any help would be appreciated!

Bad cables. No coming back from it. Get replaced.

excuse my ignorance.. I have had the boat long. Is that the small reservoir on the motor?

I have a 2009 ZX200, I have to take my windshield off to get to the reservoir. I haven't had to do it in my boat, but my buddy has the same rig and had to add fluid to his.

So . . I am guessing it's not hydraulic steering then?
If not I would recommend getting hydraulic as an upgrade.

2008 should have hydralic steering system and not cables. That's first thing to check -- what kind of system do you have?
After that -- if fluid system, you probably need to check the levels and bleed them.
Some nifty instructions here.
If cable system, it could be a bad cable, or it could be the steering head needs some lubricant (depending if you have rotary head steering or rack/pinion steering.)
Explanation of the two primary types of cable/mechanical steering systems.
ETA: If you do have mechanical steering, I highly recommend and upgrade to SeaStar Hydrallic. Pretty easy DIY project and worth every penny on any boat with a 150HP or higher. (in my opinion).
