Montana has elk tags available. It is pretty weather dependant based on shorter seasons and migration if rifle hunting

I've been elk hunting 4 times in Colorado. Killed a nice 5x5 my 3rd year (after missing a nice 6x6 the previous year).

We did self guided public land hunts. Camped on the mountain in a nice outfitter tent my buddy has. Great time and beautiful scenery.

Colorado has the largest elk population in the country, and has 2 over-the-counter rifle seasons, so that's probably your best bet. Check out the state game and fish website. It has alot of info and all the stats for kills in all the game management areas.

I got the preference point this past April and trying to draw next year for an elk hunt in CO. If we all draw it's gonna be fricking epic. Got a few old timers bringing us who've been hunting the area for a longg time.

You may want to check out Montana and Idaho as those are probably "lesser known" states for Elk then wyoming and Colorado so a lot of times you can get better rates. Idaho has tons of Over the counter tags for rifle, not sure about Montana

This. If you are interested in Idaho and don't want a guide I can show you where we went. I marked it on my gps. Lots of Elk were there just didn't get a shot.

Went Elk hunting in Wyoming - was on Ptarmigan Mountain just outside of Cody, Wyoming.

I would say this was probably the most memorable place I'd ever been.

At the top of the Mountain in the middle of a prairie there were 8-10 tee pee rings. Probably the coolest thing I'd ever seen. Took 2 days on horseback to get there.

We stayed at a friends house a few miles from the T E Ranch on the South Fork Road....most scenic views I can remember.

I would want to go to Wyoming since a cousin lives in Jackson Hole

I went elk hunting in Colorado last year and it was amazing.

I went on opening day of rifle season and the elk were high up in the mountains. I would wait until later in teh season because that altitude was tough on this coon arse.

OTC tags are easy to come by in some areas but not others. I want to cabellas and bought one. It depends on what unit you are in. Do a little homework.

There's 2 ways to go about it.

You can either apply in April for the draw or buy an OTC license when you arrive. When I did it, the 1st and 4th rifle seasons were draw only. These were only 5 or 6 days seasons. The 2nd and 3rd rifle were OTC, and were 9 day seasons. The bow season opens in early September I think. Muzzle loader is right after.

For the draw, you request what season, Game Management Unit (GMU), weapon and sex of elk you want. You get a 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice. Like 1st choice would be an either-sex bow hunting tag in a good area. 2nd choice could be a cow tag muzzle loader in a different GMU.

Most OTC tags are bull tags in the non-trophy units. We hunted the Navajo Peak area just east of Chromo. You can drive and camp near the top of the mountain. Check it out on Google Earth.
