I agree with bapple on pretty much everything but recoil concerning .45 vs 9mm.
There's definitely a difference but it's not as dramatic as people expect it to be. Since 9mm, 40, and 45 all pretty much do the same thing, I like 9mm for the extra capacity.

Then again, I actually like shooting my 760 ft/lb rounds from a compact
I bet that fireball is quite impressive.

When you try to force a carry gun into a home defense role you are limiting yourself for no reason. Why not have a full sized semi auto that's easier to shoot and can also hold 17 rounds?
Agree 100%

Hell, for that matter, why not get a full sized 357 revolver that is easier to shoot and can hold 6-8 rounds?
No .357 revolver is a horrible self defense weapon.
Stick with a 9 mm with 17 rounds.
But the absolute best home defense weapon for females......AR-15 7 or 10 inch barrel.

Why would you recommend a light weight revolver for a defensive pistol to be used in the home?
I'm of the opinion that a woman is more apt to use a pistol if they are comfortable using it. A lightweight revolver is more likely to be used by a woman for leisure shooting as well as self-defense over anything else. Do I think it is the ultimate defense gun? Absolutely not, but I'm not a woman needing comfort in a gun that I'm depending on being my end all be all self-defense firearm.
My MIL searched for pistols at 10 different locations handling damn near every one of them when she decided to get a pistol. The LCR was her decision based on her comfort level. Once she got it, both of her daughters followed suit. There is one in my wife's nightstand and I use one for CC most of the time now. I think it is a great little firearm for the price, which is another reason I suggested it. I always love these dick pulling contests on which gun is better in a certain scenario. I made a suggestion and OP said he would check it out. Short sighted comments like this are why I no longer shop in your store.

Small guns are not comfortable to shoot, especially lightweight guns. Small guns are meant to be carried concealed, the trade off is more felt recoil, less ammo and a lot of times, less than adequate sights. I've talked to many women who have a lightweight revolver that hate shooting it and are looking for something else.
You suggested an LCR, your entitled to you're suggestion. Everyone else on this board is entitled to rebuttal. I agree with the other individuals in the industry in this thread that suggest against the LCR, while it is certainly an option, is not the best option for a defensive gun that is not required to be carried or concealed.

The smith .500 is a very large handgun.
Let's do this.
Let's do this.

I don't think it was a short sighted comment. It was a legitimate question followed with a thoughtful answer on my part. It's not a dick pulling contest.
No brands were bashed. No names were called. No hate was shown. No one said your choice of purchase was wrong.
I sell a ton of LCRs for CC and recommend them for that role.
No doubt that a person is more apt at using it if they feel comfortable with it. It's something we preach at the shop.
However, I think we do a great disservice in the gun culture by not taking the time to help novice shooters whether it be female or male make an informed decision rather than taking the easy way out just to make a sale.
The decision should be up to the shooter which firearm fits their needs. I also believe that the gun culture/community and lazy gun salesmen who are not shooters but salesmen are major contributors as well.
I've shot with countless women over the past ten years and more so in the past three who have shown up with lightweight revolvers only to end up shooting something along the size of a g19. When asked why they bought the revolver in the first place they said they felt comfortable with it in the store but no one really took the time to show them how to operate a semi-auto properly. After a session they usually say "that's so easy".

what bapple said. do not get her a j-frame smith or a similarly-sized weapon as her first gun. let her train with and make use of full size 9 and she can learn how to shoot a snub down the road. learning to properly use sights is so important. you dont want her learning on something that has mere suggestions of sights. start out with a real gun and then work towards being able to handle a small frame.
you dont want her to hate shooting from the outset

Not neccessarily.
If the gun is too small for your hands it is uncomfortable.
Just like if the frame is too large for your hand it won't be comfortable shooting.
The key is to find the right fit and for some females with smaller hands a small or medium size handgun is more comfortable.

My wife has a hard time racking a slide on a full size 9mm - she has no problem with her PK380 and is deadly accurate with it, also as accurate with her 38 LCR that she keeps close by the bed. Let's face it at 2am in the dark in a panick what ever is easiest for her to grab and shoot without thinking about to much is the best option.

Get out of here with that stuff! You need to trot her arse down to the spotun' goods store and get her a BIG gun with all kinda stuff strapped to it! After all, all home defense/invasion cases happen at high noon, out in the screet runnin' from bush to bush, dumas!

Recommendation: don't get your wife a gun. One day she'll get pissed off and shoot you.
Alternatively, get her a nice 20ga that you can borrow to dove hunt with.

Ruger Sp101 3 or 4 inch barrel, 357 mag. She can shoot 38 special +p from these guns with no recoil.
Change out hammer and trigger springs to make them a little lighter for her. Maybe from 12-10lbs and from 10-8lbs.

And before anyone says "well you don't need all that ammo. It's not the OK Coral," that's an arrogant way to look at it. There is no telling how much ammo will be needed. People react differently when shot and there's obviously no way to empirically test it. I do know that when a human body is shot, fight or flight kicks in and superhuman abilities start to surface.
Its nice to see some one that understands firearm usage. To go along with what you said Newtonian mechanics tells us for every action there is an equal amd opposite reaction. In Firearms that means the actual recoil is exactly the impact the bullet will inflict on the target. Its not the force impacting that stops or knocks down said target but their reaction to the bullet hitting them.
That is why anyone with adrenalin pumping through may not drop even with a fatal shot. Humans beings like any other animal that size can survive a short time with a fatal hit. If the person being shot has any narcotic, alcohol or medication in their system, do not expect them to drop upon impact. That is why in any real defensive shooting class such as tactical carbine and tactical handgun classes teach to continue firing until the threat is no longer a threat.
quote:
But never once have I heard someone in a self defense encounter say, "Man, I would've loved to have fewer rounds." I rather have as many rounds as I possibly can because I don't know how many rounds I will need to neutralize the threat.
And you're right again. People keep equating hunting deer with self defense. Those 2 activities are worlds apart.

Semi-auto 9mm with 12-16 round capacity is better off for defense.

My wife carries a LCR-.38, and I am glad she does. (she also practices shooting it.)
