Didn't hear a single gobble at first area so went a few miles up the road. It was about 9am and my dad and I were walking and periodically calling. A cobbler hammered back right on top of us and we sat down. We called again in about 5 minutes and he hammered back again. We shut up for a while until he gobbled on his own and then we called. I saw him coming through the woods about 70 yards away. He came in to about 55 yards behind some brush and wouldn't budge. I could hear him drumming. After about 15 minutes of that and a few more gobble/calling trade offs he left. I don't think that I was calling to much. I also don't know if he saw the decoy. It was pretty exciting hearing that bird that close. You can hear different tones of the gobble that you can't normally hear. Should I have just not called while he was drumming?

Doesn’t sound like you did anything wrong to me. But I also don’t think he saw your decoy. As I’m sure you know in the “real world” the hens go to the gobbler. Sounds like he came most of the way in and stalled like “Okay here I am...come on Momma”. Also if you could see him 70 yards away it must have been pretty open. Better bet would have been to be somewhere thicker so he had to come closer to see what was going on. Chalk it up to him winning this one and go get him tomorrow.

Could have had something between you and him he didn't wanna cross. I've had them stall up and not cross small ditches. Never know but that bird is killable.

One sit down where u made the first call he answered. The other backs off 30-60 yards based off topo and how quick things are happening. Back man makes a couple clucks, purrs, or scratch some leaves. Front man shots gob in face. Two man game is deadly when two hunters have hunted together for a bit.

If he was right on top of you the first time he gobbled. Then you called later and he gobbled....depending where he was compared to first gobble and second, also if he cut you off while calling, I likely would not have called the third time. You never know with turkeys though, that’s what makes it so dang fun. I’d get after him again tomorrow.

Agreed. Early season before all the foliage is out is tough for this reason.

Shitty advice. There are certainly loads and chokes that can do this, but we have no idea if OP has patterned his gun.

Also, OP may be more concerned with having a good hunt than just killing a bird to post on Facebook.

Great post. Killing a bird that far is nothing special. It's all about tricking him and getting him close. Scoped shotguns and shooting birds at 70 yards are for the gays. Butterball turkeys are cheap at the grocery store

No, it isn’t. Patterning the gun should be the very first thing before someone steps into the woods.

If he hasn’t patterned his gun then he doesn’t need to be in the woods.

Gotta get closer next time before calling. I know you said you were walking and calling. Easy to get screwed like that sometimes for this exact reason. Turkey starts coming to you and you haven’t set up properly. Get where he has to come in range in order to see the “hen” he’s looking for. He could see where you were calling from and didn’t see a hen.

Depends on what kind of call you were making. At that distance I would’ve just purred a little. Or whined.

Send coordinates pls. I will go do a qc check on the gobbler to make sure he is still functioning properly

Just happens sometimes. Anyone who hunts these things gets schooled sometimes. One thing I’ve found that helps me with “hung up” birds is purring and clucking a little and the old leaf scratch. I’ve had them ignore calls but lose their minds when I scratch some leaves.

I don't think you necessarily did anything wrong.

Public land birds are very hard to kill. Even when you do the "right" things
