Anyone ever had an issue when paying by certified check/money order? This will be my first winning auction where I pay with anything other than a credit card.

Money order or paypal are the only things I would accept when I sold. Money order is the norm

I collected via paypal for a few thousand bucks until they caught me....

Sold the last of my stuff via money order....no horror stories but what a phucking pain in the arse to sit there and wait on the mail to get the money to arrive via mail, after dicknose waited a week to mail it, to only discover it is a personal check, then have to validate funds, then finally ship shite that has been sitting around for 2 weeks since the auction ended....much less trying to keep track of all of that bull shite!!!

Long story made short....phuck the system as long as you can with paypal and then when you get caught....get out of the gunbroker business because the other methods are a pain in the arse and slow as shite!

Paypal is not supposed to be used for firearms. If you are caught using to buy firearms and get ripped off they won't help you.

If you are planning to send a certified check or money order you need to send payment either delivery confirmation or have them sign for it at the post office to have proof it was received.

It also is very important to do your homework: How is the seller's feedback? Can you find the seller on google or whitepages.com using their contact information? Are you being told to send the money to a P.O. Box? Do other people who bought from the seller have very low feedback? If so they could be alters. Look for red flags.

ETA: Most douchebag sellers on there now charge a 3% fee to use credit cards. I think it is a shite move, but probably worth it to have some peace of mind.

oh and added note...when paypal catches you they will lock you account down for 6 months and hold your money as a sort of punishment I guess...so if you are rolling the dice and buying or selling via paypal...you better empty your account regularly..

I also only accept money order/certified check when selling on gunbroker.

To many problems with PayPal as mentioned in previous posts.

Guys I'm the buyer in this circumstance and it's slightly unnerving to be overnighting a certified check for $1200 tomorrow morning. Once that check leaves my hand I lo all power. And I've read the fraud protection guidelines but it's only for $500. The seller has good feedback but still......

I wish I could settle your nerves but unfortunately, I cant! Look at the sellers feedback and what items he has sold in the past....

If he has sold items for that much money in the past and has received good feedback then I would roll the dice if it is a good deal.

BUT...if the seller hasnt sold anything before or this is his 1st time selling something in that price range...I would be extremely hesitant.

Why not do this?????

Tell him that you will mail him a personal check....tell him to hold the gear until the check clears. Once it clears, then he ships it. If he doesnt ship it then at least you have some form of recourse with the cashed check...right?

I mean with a money order...that shat is just gone!

But I am sure that both methods of "recourse" would be an absolute nightmare to follow through with!

I have never bought anything (only sold) so I never really put any thought into protecting myself as a buyer...just throught about protecting myself as a seller...

I just did a GB certified check transaction for $835 and I was only nervous about the FFL. He seems to be the sketchy part of the transaction, but it went 100% smoothly. A few days if worry though. Trust it man, that's all I got for you.

I'm thinking a bank certified check I could put the clamps on it Monday worst case..... He'll have the check on Saturday bc I'm taking the initiative to overnight it to him. By overnighting it I KNOW that it will get there Saturday. I'll start contacting him Monday morning for a tracking number. That's all I can do.

In order to become a seller, gunbroker asked some very private questions to verify I am who I say I am.

I am a new seller and only have a couple feedback comments so its hard to judge based off feedback when they are new sellers. Many people have recently started selling on gunbroker due to all these crazy prices people are paying. So some sellers may only have a few sales.

At the end of the day i guess there is no guarantee but gun broker appears to do a lot to protect buyers and sellers.

I just google mapped the guy's residence and checked him out on whitepages - everything checks out. I have access to a certain database at work that I can run a type of background check on him if shite goes south. If that happens I'll just turn him over to the OT.

But that doesnt do anything when "the seller" scats away with the money.... gunbroker will say "damn, well here is your 500 guarantee that we offer" and you are SOL

I believe there are plenty of "good" new sellers on gunbroker without much feedback and I am sure that there are a lot more people up to no good...but if I was a buyer...I would roll the dice on a new buyer for anything more than the 500 protection offered by gunbroker

Couldnt agree more...I havent heard a lot of nightmare stories for as many transactions that take place on that site since the madness started.

Again,
if it is a 500 dollar item...no worries.
if you buy a 1k item...500 protected 500 your risk
if you buy a 1.5k....well you know what I am saying....

Does anyone know if a seller was to do that, does gun broker seek action against that seller? Even though they only insure the buyer for up to $500

When I read the fine print it says their "insurance" doesn't cover a transaction after 60 days.... I interpreted that as third party coverage meaning transactional insurance?

shat if I know..I do know that I hope I never have to deal with any of the fine print of an online based company though....can you imagine!!!

They dont even have a phone number, address...nothing! When I 1st got started I submitted a question about listing on their site to the gunbroker team.....I received a reply about 45 days later and it almost seemed automated...because it didnt tell me shat about what I had inquired about.
