I'm thinking I want to get a hand gun because it is easier to store and easier to handle. Am I wrong to assume that?

As was mentioned by another poster, handguns are more compact and less expensive than long guns in general so I'm sure that would be fine.

Also, someone mentioned trying certain guns out. How do you do that? Can you go to the gun range and they have some you can try? I live close to a shooting range.

As also was mentioned, shooting ranges typically have a few demo guns you can test before making a purchase.

Also would be in your best interest to check and see if the range has some range officers who offer lessons. As has been mentioned numerous times, if you have no other training to reference rather than watching some professional puppets in a movie, you are in need of training. Get on that before purchasing.

A pump shotgun is the best thing for home defense and you can get some decent ones within your budget.

Remington 870 or the mossberg pump will be your best bet.

IMHO, I agree with the posters who recommended the Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 shotguns.

The AR platform advocates are correct also that the AR can be a great defense gun, but it costs in excess of your price range. And as a self proclaimed inexperienced shooter, know that the .223 round from an AR will travel half a mile and still kill what it hits, if you happen to miss the much closer target that threatens you.

Shotgun rounds such as a good double ought buckshot, have the stopping power of the gods, but don't travel near the distance and lose their effective kill range relatively quickly. Great for your exact scenario- home defense. I have the Mossberg 500 Special Purpose Road Blocker for my home defense gun. A bit more pricey, but good shotgun. The standard models will be fine for what you want them for.

A pistol may be a better choice. Maneuverability & capacity is my priority. Pick any reputable brand and you'll be fine.

a pump shotgun, but dont keep one in the chamber. Cock it and the criminals will flee in terror and your wife's panties will instantly moisten.
