Lane T. Thibodeaux, of Gueydan, was fined $2,500 and sentenced to 45 days in federal prison for shooting a whooping crane in Vermilion Parish that eventually died in November, 2014.

quote:

Through the course of the investigation, agents learned Thibodeaux was responsible, and eventually obtained a search warrant for his phone, which had videos and photos of him shooting game birds from a vehicle on a public road near where the crane was shot, according to the release.

quote:

The phone also contained information indicating Thibodeaux was allegedly involved in illegal narcotics activity, which was turned over to the Vermilion Parish Narcotics Task Force, the release states. During the investigation, agents also learned that Thibodeaux threatened the informants not to give any information to LDWF agents about the whooping crane. Agents arrested Thibodeaux on charges of felony witness intimidation on March 4, 2015, and those charges are still pending at this time, according to the release.

Agreed. They should figure how much money has been spent on reintroducing them and how many cranes are alive in the wild. Then fine him whatever that amount is per bird.

He should make himself comfortable while in prison. Might be in there for more than 45days.

I've eaten Sandhills and they're delicious. I hear Whoopers are damn good too. Hence why they were nearly hunted to extinction in the early 1900's.

We just breasted the sandills, and grilled them rare like a steak.

If the fine is less than what a deep pocket guy would pay to kill one on a guided trip then the fine is not high enough.
