I posted this on The Rant, but will probably get more replies here. I run my generator once a month to make sure it's in working order. Pulled it out yesterday and the grounding wire had broken off. I looked and can't find where it was originally attached. I looked in the manual and found the ground lug, but there's no way that's where it originally was attached. Is it acceptable to just attach it to any bolt that's on the frame? I know some say it's not needed, but I've always had one.

I'm pretty sure you can just ground it anywhere on the frame.

ETA: If I was worried about it, I would just run a new wire to the ground lug.

Yes grounding the frame is sufficient. Just make sure to get a good connection by removing any paint at the attachment site for a metal to metal bond.

If you are connecting to the load by way of a cord/ receptacle. the frame of the generator should not be grounded. Per the National Electrical Code.

If you are connecting via a Transfer Switch consult the manufacture.

Get a longer wire or grind the paint from the frame and screw it in there. I'd just get a longer wire

The wire length is not an issue. Just wasn't sure where to attach it.
