I got into something weed eating a year ago. They were nesting in the ground. I got hit 14 times. I ran 100 yards and there was one stinging me through my hat. I had to smash him where he then got me in the palm of my hand. All of the bites or stings were through clothing except my hand. They just never stopped. I stayed swollen for a few days even taking Benadryl. I’m still not exactly sure what they were. They were mostly black with some white. Maybe the Bourdons. Whatever it was, they were way worse than yellow jackets.

I have managed to get into 3 different nests of ground nesting bees. Once I was on a tractor spreading dirt piles down. Apparently the yellow jackets had built a big nest in the dirt pile. I jumped off the tractor and ran as soon as I saw them pouring out the ground and only got hit once. I fixed that nest after dark with a bottle of gas, no fire just gas and that killed them. A few years later I was bush hogging along a big drainage ditch when all of a sudden I started getting stung. They hurt like hell and kept chasing me until I got about 100 yards away. Same fix that night. These were not yellow jackets they looked like bumble bees and they tore my arse up. The last time was damn yello jackets again and me and my son were playing with my dog, throwing a ball to him and he would run and retrieve it. Well, he disturbed a nest and they came pouring out the ground. They swarmed the dog and them me and my son. I had to run in and grab the dog to drag him away because he had simply laid down and was yelping and crying every time one got him. I ended up with 25-30 stings. My son had 15 or so and the poor dog had at least 50 stings. Brought him to the vet and he gave him a Benadryl shot and some steroids to take for a couple of days and he was fine. I was in misery for a day or two. I know there are at least two different species of ground nesters and they ain’t all yellow jackets. But I have never seen a true hornet in the ground just in those big arse paper nests.

Bumblebees and yellow jackets are the only two options really.

Only one time in my life have I seen them do this. They had a nest in the ground right beside my bunk feeder. Oddly enough, there was a yellowjacket burrow hole right beside the hornet burrow hole. I poured gas in the holes and got both nests. I have seen these bald faced hornets build a nest right on top of the ground in thick weeds, too. The first time, I bushhogged the top half of the nest off and saw them buzzing around as I approached that area for a second swipe with the bushhog. Didn't get stung, thank goodness, but that's when I discovered for a fact that bald faced hornets are faster than a Massey-Ferguson tractor.

There was no yellow at all on these things. They were black. They had two spots they were boiling out of. They were mean enough I have left them alone. They can have that overgrown old fence.

I was messing with the hose in the front of the house this week and a Guinea wasp somehow got inside my Crocs and started stinging.
I didn’t see it until I got out of the bushes, but I thought I was on some electricity.

There was a ground nest of something similar in my yard this year. Solid black with a white band on its body. Shape of a bumble bee but a little bigger. I have google image searched and not found anything similar. They weren’t bald faced because the head was solid black, at least the one that got me on the arm was. Took a month to heal. Got popped 4 other places but through my shirt, those healed in a week. Bad mfers. I never could find the hole because of tall weeds. Every time I got close the ground would rumble and I would run away like a bitch. They are now gone, moved south for winter?? This is east TX

I have stumbled upon two bumble bee nests in the last 3 years. The entrances were a bit bigger than the small yellow jacket hole. They get really aggressive around the nest just like yellow jackets. Got stung once. Easily as bad of a sting as anything else I've had.

I’m trying to figure out the logic behind this tactic

That's what I wondered, I mean I can see if you're on fire but with 200 stinging wasps on you? whats the logic in dropping and rolling?

Yes it does..it tops out at 3 mph in reverse. I was next to a pond so I was worried about that but it all worked out.

Probably bumblebees? ETA that bumblebees will have multiple entrance holes.
