Looking to purchase a new GPS / Fishfinder combo leaning more towards the Lowrance HDS-5 but being doing some research on Garmin 541 or hummingbird 598 with down imaging. Anyone have one of these or experience with pros and cons of either model?

Do you plan on buying the extra maps? I am pretty sure with garmin, you must buy only theirs, which are more expensive

I have always used Lowrance/ Eagle, thinking about buying a HDS 5 this weekend. IMO I find Lowrance/ Eagle easier to learn, more user friendly.

I have the HDS but I'm strictly shallow water fishing ,being marsh or swamps. If you fish deep freshwater reservoirs and lakes for bass or sac-a-lait the side imaging technology is a must.

Do they make that much of a difference? Played on an HDS-5 this weekend at cabelas and it has the major lakes labeled, will a map upgrade give you More details on waterways?
