Gonna use it mostly for saltwater (snook & reds) & larger freshwater species (snakeheads)

Probably gonna keep 15-20lbs braid on it (with 30lbs leader if necessary)

Looking for 7ft minimum. Maybe a slightly extended butt end. Trying to keep it around $100 or under if possible. Looking for some good deals if they're out there....point me in the right direction. Any advice or tips are welcomed, as I don't know anything about rods, brands, etc. Heard good things about the Star rods, but I think they can get pricey.

A quick google search shows those going for $250

Links to any current good deals for any of these suggested rods?

Go to academy and get the cork handle ethos 7ft. It would work well for your situation. It's also on sale right now I think for 49.99 and if you have any troubles you just take it back.

Battles are very solid reels. They are a little on the heavy side tho.

I'm in favor of STAR rods. I have a Stellar Lite M action, 7'6" on an older Penn Slammer 260 and love it. Should run you right around $100, maybe $110. I've caught everything on that set-up. Redfish, trout, snook, catfish, bass, bonita, small mangroves, bluefish, and even a juvenile goliath grouper. Really have no complaints about Star rods.

Since the Battle 4000 will have plenty of line capacity, I would up my line to 30# braid - and I highly recommend an 8 strand braid like Suffix 832 or Power Pro Super Slick 8 versus a 4 strand braid like regular Power Pro.

Thanks for the advice.

How far can you cast with your 30# braid compared with 15 or 20?

IMO, casting with less than 20# braid is like casting with thread.

Many more tangles.

20 is still pretty fine, and doubt you would see much casting difference. I was ready to go away from braid when I was using 10-15# because of tangles. Someone suggested 20# and its a world of difference.

I don't notice a substantial difference and the additional strength and abrasion resistance of the 30# makes up for any little loss in casting distance. The only reason I use 20# braid on my Penn Slammer 260 is line capacity, but once again that shouldn't be an issue on the Battle 4000. It can hold plenty of 30#.

Excuse my ignorance, but what's the benefit of the 8 strand braid over the 4 strand?

Smoother, rounder braid. Limper, easier to tie knots, more manageable with better castability. Also, if it does get nicked, you're less likely to break off because it has more strands to distribute the strength with. If you cut 1 of the strands of regular power pro, you line strenth is decreased by 25%, with 8 strand it would only be decreased by 12.5%. But the main advantage is the limpness and castability.

Go with 30# Fins XS braid. The XS is 8 strand vs the windtamer which is 4 strand.

Oh, and the H20 ethos rods are legit. I have Castaway skeletons, custom rods, Abu veritas, etc. and I really do love the Ethos rod more than most of the others I have and they are a fraction of the price.

Really appreciate the advice y'all

Damn, 30# braid and I won't even need any leader line

Just since everyone in here knows their stuff and is real helpful, what type of leader do you use with this set-up? (Let's say you're going for redfish)?

30# leader w/ 30# braid?
Fluro or mono?
Any specific brands?
Prices vary so much by brand and type.

Fluoro leader for sure. 20# and brand doesn't matter as much as make sure you get fluoro leader material as opposed to just a fluoro line you plan to use as a leader. They say the leader is a little tougher. You can do a straight braid to fluoro knot which you can get online or you can do a small swivel to join them also.

Also, you can get fins on Amazon.
