So, I've been wanting a GoPro for years. Just never pulled the trigger. Finally ordered one from Amazon. Any tips on mounting for kayak and bass boat? Mainly wanting to catch some early topwater action. Should I just use a head strap or chest harness? There seems to be a crap load of stuff on the market. Looks like I could easily waste some money.

Maybe soon I'll have some videos to show off like cbr900racer22. I usually enjoy his videos.

TIA

I put one of the stick on mounts that come with it on the front of my console for my boat. I need to find a way to wire it straight to my boat battery, though. Even with a battery backpack it only lasts about 2 hours. I have three batteries and two of the backpacks (got em semi cheap on Amazon, not GoPro brand) and if I'm lucky I can get 4.5-5 hours out of it.

Damn. They sure claim a longer battery life than that!

Yeah I was very disappointed in the batteries. But I think I only spent around $40 or $50 on all the extras I have as far as batteries go.

I just bought a Hero 5 Black last week, videos of my kayak failures in 4K resolution coming soon.

A while back I bought one of those mount variety packs from Amazon, they're around $20, come with a carrying case and more mounts than I know what to do with.

I've used the headstrap a few times but it's a bitch when wearing a hat, I eventually want to get an Action Hat. Pack and Paddle carries them locally, they float even with the camera attached so that's a nice insurance policy for when I inevitably drop it.

ETA: This is the mount bundle I bought. I wouldn't suggest using the suction mount that comes with it, it didn't grab very well so I threw it away. I already have one of the GoPro brand suction mounts and it works great.

I just got the Hero+. I figured that would be plenty camera for my needs. I don't like that you can't remove the camera from the case. I'm hoping that doesn't come back to bite me in the arse. But I did get an extended warranty. So, if I get 3 years out of it I will have gotten my money's worth.

They sell the Wasabi battery extenders on Amazon. Supposed to add up to 3 hours of recording time. But it kind of bulks up the back of the camera. I wonder if it would fit on that Action Hat with the battery extender?

ETA: I think I may have found a solution

I've never seen the battery extenders but it might not fit on the Action Hat unless you mount it on the top mount.

ETA: There's a hat clip in that pack I posted it, it looks/functions a little different but does the same thing.

Ok, I see it now. Yeah that one looks like its just cheap plastic. Does it seem fairly durable?

I haven't tried to mount anything to it yet but it seems fairly durable and secure. The inner surface of the clip is grooved so it should stay in place fairly well.

Head mount can make for vomit induced vertigo. When wearing you have to pay attention to not turn your head quickly. I have habit of looking down, looking up, looking down... etc when I get excited.

The best look with wide angle in my opinion is as far back as you can get it. 4'-6' either away or above the kayak. I love the angle the Palmetto Kayak monopod mount gives above your head.

I'll experiment with it. Looked up that Palmetto monopod and it looks just like an idea I had using pvc.

There are about a million ways to mount a GoPro to a Kayak. I like the poles that stick up behind you personally.

If you want to vlog, get something center on the front pointed at you as well. Stick mounts work good for that.

I ordered one of those accessory kits like YOURADHERE posted. I'll see what I can do with that.

Been looking up a bunch of DIY videos. I can probably make a good pole mount with one of the 3 way pivot arms that comes in those kits.

Thanks for the help guys. Hopefully I'll be able to share some decent videos in the future.

That kit comes with a selfie stick that's retractable, and has a clamp mount. Though I haven't used it yet and I have no use for a selfie stick I put the clamp on the top corner of my seat and have it set so that I can extend it up and back off my left shoulder. I question how sturdy it'll be from wiggles and movement in the seat but I plan on trying it out or maybe modifying it so I can stick it in a rod holder.

I have this little phone clamp that I tried to use a couple weeks ago. It didn't really work too well. Not to mention the lack of memory and battery in my phone. I managed to take this crappy video though.

That's when I decided to pull the trigger on a GoPro. It can't possibly do worse than that.

I picked up a hand gimble to smooth out the footage. IF you watch this video at the begining i am using it, and then i switch to the head mount, which is alot bumper. You can see the boat bouncing to the waves, but the picture says smooth.

That thing costs as much as my camera! Now if I were doing videos like the ones you are, I'd definitely get one. It's good to know about in case I might want one in the future.

ETA: If I were doing videos like the awesome ones that you do, I wouldn't have bought the entry level GoPro either.
