How rare of a kill is this golden eye hen. I've never heard of anyone killing one around here (south LA). Can I pick up a drake easily later in life to complete the mount? Should I just head north one day and pick up a pair? Whatcha think OB

If you're asking this question it is a trophy to you. Mount that thing if you're proud of it.

She's wrapped up in the freezer... might be going to the taxidermist soon

I would take it to the taxidermist. I shot one north of the Cameron Parish Court House about 25 years ago. The blind got two hens of five or six that decoyed. I have never seen a Goldeneye since then.

Back then I did hobby taxidermy work and had a species collection but I only kept the "Copperhead" a BWT Drake and an American Merganzer Drake and a pair of Gray Ducks. My skills were woefully inept and I did not want to display the remainder.

Talk me off the ledge please... 2 days ago I had 4 birds land 40-50 yards from me. Probably 40ish. 1 drake and 3 hens. It was earlier and I thought it was just a spoonbill. After deciding not to shoot due to the range, they flew off and I thought man that doesn't look right. I now realize what I passed on. Tell me I did the right thing..

Edit: I'd hate to start a story by saying I shot one sitting on the water...

That ain't duck hunting. Thats shooting. Anybody can kill em sitting on the water. If you need meat that bad, do to Winn Dixie.

Why do you go duck hunting? For the meat? Is there that much meat on a duck breast to feed your family? Or are you one of them who has to brag that he killed his limit? Does your "worth" of a hunt go up based on how many ducks you kill? Some of the most memorable hunts I've had have fallen far short of my limit.

I'm not gonna tell a guy who is hunting with me he can't shoot one on the water, but I'm not gonna applaud him and act like it's some great accomplishment when he is looking one way, and a duck lands on the water the other way and he blasts it. He did nothing to get that duck there. When did duck hunting become about who can kill the most every day?

fricking duck dynasty.

I shoot em on the water all day. Nothing wrong with that. If anything, it says your spread was that Fricking fine that they decoyed fully in. Not just that, your kill Rate will be higher instead of just wounding them in the air.

I bet you own every season of duck dynasty and were probably born shortly before the show started

The funny thing is he probably sky blasts with his 3.5" black cloud all day long.

But god forbid someone take one off the water

Shouldn't he be shooting a single shot? That would be more sporting...

I'm confused

You couldn't identify a duck on the water at 40 yards, but now you're playing the holier than thou card.

One of the hardest shots is a duck on the water. As hard as a dove on a power line.
