My son recently gave me a Glock 38
Have experience with a Remington 45 (good shooting gun imo) but none with the Glock.
Any opinions or experiences good or bad with the G38.
I guess one downside would be the ammo cost.
Look forward to shooting it...

TIA

Biggest downfall is ammo and lack of ammo manu support. The round was developed during the clinton ban to give people 10 rds(depending on model) of 45 in a 9mm size gun. It's really a solution looking for a problem. There is literally no redeeming value for it nowadays.

First thing, id try to find a caliber conversion barrel and convert that gun to something different.

Second thing, id throw that 45 gap barrel as far into whatever closest lake there is to you.

Unless you want to reload and like weird calibers that is.

Unfortunately, this is pretty much the case. I think Gaston was driven by ego to create a cartridge that bears his name.

The GAP cartridge allows the gun to have a smaller frame, and still be ballistically similar to the .45 ACP. I don't think there is a manufacturer other than Glock who makes a pistol in this caliber.

GAP practice ammo (FMJ) costs about twice what you'll pay for FMJ 9mm.

I think the .45 GAP is dying a slow death. I'm surprised it has lasted as long as it has. With today's ammo, there's not a significant difference among the .45, the .40 and the 9mm when it comes to terminal ballistics.

I know you have limited options since it was a gift. But if it wouldn't hurt your son's feelings, I'd try to sell it and get a Glock 19 (cheap practice ammo, and good terminal ballistics with HST or Ranger-T ammo).

Aren't there some State Troopers and Law enforcement that carry or like this gun....it may not be issued by departments but I've read where some like to carry the G38 when off duty.

I seem to recall that three or four state agencies issued them when they first came out. I have no idea how many LEO's would have carried then off-duty.

Outside of the departments that issue them, Id be willing to bet that 90% of officers have never heard of the 45 GAP.

Everywhere I looked says only four agencies picked it up. In that research they only list three, I guess the fourth is make believe.

OP dont take this the wrong way, there is a reason that pistol was $349 and there is a reason you cant find ammo for it. It just didnt solve anything that wasnt already provided by the 9mm, 40, and 45 ACP.

Id seriously buy a conversion barrel and just use 9mm or whatever and be happy.
