Getting ready to purchase my first pistol, and Iv been looking at a few different weapons, Glock 19, Springfield Xd with the 4 inch barrel, canik tp9sa, and the M&P fullsize. My real question is this, IV held and shot 2 of the 4 (Glock and springfield) and the Glock is nose high when I through the gun up, while the other 3 seem to naturally line up in my hand. Is this a regular occurance with those of you that have a Glock? im assuming it's because of the more aggressive grip angle than the other 3. Thanks.

It's the grip angle.

I will say when you get used to it, followup shots are easier.

If my 1911 was cut in further I would be in love.

Alright, that's what I figured. I was going to ask that question to, my buddy said the same, that you get used to it. Are the follow up shoots easier due to the grip angle allowing you to control recoil?

Grip angle. Slanted forward. I have a Glock 19 that never leaves my side.

I would say go M&P with an Apex trigger kit between those you mentioned. Also, consider the H&K VP9.

Does anybody have an input on the canik tp9sa? everything I've read and watched has said that it is an incredible pistol for what it is

Well that ends the search then!

Glock seems to be the only one with that super exaggerated grip angle. Almost every other handgun on the market has a grip angle based on the 1911. I can't shoot Glocks for crap because all of my guns have the 1911 type grip angle and it points much more naturally for me. If I switch over to a Glock it forces me to cant my wrist more to compensate so that muzzle isn't pointed in the air. I'm sure with practice I could adjust but I see no need to.

I would also consider throwing the FNS9 on your list there. I bought one recently and really love it. Even though it's a full size and not a mid sized gun like the 19, it is an extremely underrated gun and handles very well. But of the guns you listed, you probably won't be dissatisfied with any of them.

The Glock is a fine piece of hardware. I purchased my first pistol about 2 months ago (XD) and I know that extra grip safety really helped me feel better about easing into the pistol world.

I've had one student show up with one. I fired a couple of rounds through it - meh.

As you said, it seems to be a good pistol "for what it is." The only "selling point" is the low price, which IMO shouldn't be the primary criterion for a self-defense pistol.

People obsess about the grip angle on pistols. Just go buy one and shoot it. You'll get used it just like you got used to the "angle" of the seat, brake pedal and gas pedal on the last vehicle you bought.

Go get a G19. There are plenty of good guns on the market (M&P, HK, SIG, some of the Rugers, some of the Berettas, et al). But you will not find a more reliable gun than the G19. Reliability trumps price, decockers, rosewood grips and everything else.

p.s. I saw some refurbished Gen 3 G19's on Gunbroker for $375 recently. That's a much better deal, for the same $$, than the Canik you mentioned.

Love the G19. The simple design and reliability

The M&P is my second. Second mainly because I do not like that grip texture. Looks cheap, feels cheap, and seems like it will wear out. Maybe not but just seems to throw off the design of the firearm. Not that it makes the firearm less reliable.

My G19 relegated my 1911 to safe duty. And I love my 1911.

So I guess my final question is, are there some of you that pick up a glock and the grip angle has a natural feel, aka, you aren't nose high like I am when I hold it? or is this something everybody deals with and just learns to adjust to it? Because I really do like the glock, for multiple reasons, its just that all the other guns I pick up have a more natural feel to them in the sense of sight alignment.

Also, picked up the canik tp9 today at Jims for the first time and seemed to be a nice gun, it was a tad on the heavy side, but had a nice trigger with a good reset.

Bapple, looked at the fns 9 today and liked it a lot, very light and seemed to be a nice guy all the way around.

I didn't shoot my G19 nearly as well as my 1911 when I got it. I spent a couple nights watching tv with my G19 in hand (unloaded, empty mag). During commercials I would pick random targets in sight at various distances and practice target acquisition. It's basically second nature now.

Just my $0.02 but I think the whole grip angle thing is a little overstated.

Nope. Only guns that do that for me are CZ75 series, 1911s, HK VP9, and Walther PPQ. The M&P is very close. The ones I mentioned feel like they are part of my hand.

Wait for the Canik TP9v2 (hitting shelves now), which doesn't have that weird decocker. Best bang for your buck by far.

I agree the FNS9 is a very friendly, nice guy. But yea it has absolutely blown me away and is extremely underrated. Even a new shooter yesterday liked it out of all the options I let her run through. It just runs so smoothly and has a crisp sight picture. Love the gun.

If you continue to practice and shoot Glocks you won't have any trouble with it. If I practiced enough with Glocks I would get used to it but I don't own any so I just choose not to. There are plenty of expert shooters out there that could embarrass anyone with a Glock.

Shooting a Glock is just like any other platform - practice practice practice. Make every motion and movement second nature to where you don't have to think anymore.

I just shoot other guns better so choose not to shoot Glocks but don't let that hamper your decision. You won't go wrong with any gun as long as you stick with a quality brand like the ones you listed.
