One on the right, he's probably reached his potential..

I do have other pics, not all here at work with me, and a lot of the pics don't have both deer in them.

I tried to post more, but imgur is not working well from my office computer.

some of you are saying the deer on the right is older/closer to potential...

How do you pass that judgment?

I have deer hunted before, but my experience is limited, and I am damn sure not an expert.

eta: I have seen both, on the camera for a while now, the one on the right may be slightly heavier muscled, but to me they both appear to be mature deer.

Also, I have 3- 8 points I have been seeing on camera, and several smaller bucks, and does.

1 may have a slightly taller rack, but 2 looks wider and more mature

Be tough to let the one on the right walk in a split second decision, but he could probably use one more year. One on the left can definitely go another year or 2 based on the lack of definition in his front shoulder in comparison to the one on the right. Racks looking bigger with velvet can give you the trigger fever though

Honestly, this is right behind the house I am building, should be in just in time for bow season in October. I have plenty of does, and will get 1 or 2 during bow season. After I fill my freezer, I can afford to be pretty selective. but I don't want to pass on mature deer. I have a lot of young bucks, but just 3 8 points that would older/more mature, that I have seen so far.

I'm still relatively inexperienced. So, I'm trying to pick up a little information.

Further question for all of you....

If you let the one on the left walk, how big is he/his rack next yr in comparison?

I like the one on the right. Looks bigger bodied and has a wider rack. Wouldn't pass up on either though.

quote:

It takes a buck about six years to reach maximum antler size. However, a buck's first set of antlers seen by hunters come in at one year of age. At that time, the antlers will be 10-25 percent of their maximum future size. Allowing a buck to age just one more year will result in his antlers possibly doubling in size, reaching up to half their full potential in just two years! At three years their antlers jumped in size again, reaching about three-quarters of their maximum size.

unless you are hunting 500acres or more, or high fence. Shoot which ever one walks out, because you are wasting your time "giving it another year"

this is great information, but the question is where on that curve is each deer?

ie. how old is each?

my personal guess, and correct me if you feel different. The deer on the right is about 4-5 yrs.
left is 3-4 yrs.
