Getting a cat

My kids have wanted a cat forever now and I’ve always just told them maybe one day. I’m not much of a cat person, but we just bought a house with some land and I think it would be a good idea to get one to hunt snakes and mice.
I’d love for it to mainly be an outside cat. I don’t want to have a litter box. Is there such thing as having a cat that the kids can love on but it also be a cold hearted killer?
Should I just go to the pound and pick up a tom cat?
I don’t have much experience with cats so I’m pretty ignorant about them

Yeah just go get some pound kittens. They’ll be mean as shite or could turn out friendly and cuddly. The one that made our barn a home is as friendly a cat as I’ve ever been around. He’s an orange cat and my wife says orange ones are typically like that.

Depending on where you get the cat, they usually require you to sign papers that youre going to keep them inside. Ive never heard them doing it but they sometimes say they will go by the house to check on its status. I doubt that happens.
Depending on where you are, they do have places to adopt 'barn cats'. These cats tend to not be friendly though. They will be your rodent destroyer though.

My daughter got a cat from my exs girlfriends neighbor that the momma cat stopped letting the kitten feed at 3 weeks old.
We bottle fed it and now the cat is 1.5 yrs old, weighs about 10 pounds and loves me and my daughter.
She hates everyone else at first and actually bit my ex wife LOL one time.

I bet a cat will show up soon. When it does, start putting some food out for it.

Try to find 3 dark colored cats from the same litter. Dark cats will better evade predators. You want at least 2, so one will be a spare in case one has a close encounter with a coyote or automobile. Chances are at least one will be friendly, and one will be mean as shite. They will keep all manner of small rodents, reptiles, and birds at bay.

We call them "mousers" back home.

Install a cat door in your back door. Let him come and go.
Y’all need a cat or two and they need y’all. Bring them to the vet.

Had one take up with us about 10 years ago...he was a stray and I had some old dry cat food that I had used to make chum for Yellowtail with so I started feeding it to him instead of getting rid of it. Had always been indifferent toward cats until this came along....he has been a GREAT pet. Almost no maintenance. We have a doggy door for the dogs and he comes and goes as he pleases and the only real mess he ever makes is bringing half dead birds and lizards in the house for us...he thinks we like them as much as he does. They are fascinating critters. I am a dog person through and through but this cat has convinced me if I lived in an apartment and did not have a yard I would have a cat over a dog in a heartbeat....they are great pets.

That is the total opposite of my experience. Garfields that I have dealt with were mean as shite. Siamese, in my experience are the only ones worse. Tried with Siamese twice as a kid and you could not lay hands those sumbitches without damn near needing stitches.
On the whole, cats are just a damn toss up.

Word of advice. If getting one from the general public, do yourself a favor and get it neutered well before a year old.
Both males and females will spray their territory if not fixed and if they do so indoors, it's nothing short of nasty smelling.
The wife and I have a cat, our second after the last one stroked out one night and died. The latest one came from an in-law that took in a stray momma cat and had 6 kittens to get rid of.
We took a male and he's more indoor than outdoor, but does like exploring the yard a few times a day and is quick to bring in lizards and frogs he catches.
He's friendly as hell where the last one my wife got as a kitten from the SPCA was damn near feral. So, it's kind of a crapshoot as to how they will interact with people.

I guess I'm in the minority, I hate cats. The wife has two and I can't wait until they are gone.
Outside cats are definitely better, but only marginally. Look forward to cat prints all over your vehicle and possibly scratches.
Barn cats are almost a necessity. Other than that, not a fan.

Get a kitten at the animal shelter or whatever, make kids happy and it'll probably get sweet on you too and convert you.
I grew up with a cat as a kid, can be pretty cool (or horrendous) little critters. And helpful for reasons OP stated in keeping pests in check.

We have 2 cats. Both inside. As fas as can you get a cat that will be sweet and a killer, absolutely, it’s not one or the other necessarily. Our female cat is a bit of a runt. She’s 3 years old and still pretty small. She has never once shown any sort of aggression to any of the family or the other cat or our dog. She will let you do whatever yo her and she just lays there. However, if any kind of critter gets in the house, she is the first on the scene and is a stone cold killer. She will move past the dog who’s just investigating and our other much bigger and stronger male cat and destroy whatever it is. We don’t have mice or anything but we do get a lot of skinks for some reason. She does not like to go outside at all but I have no doubt she’d be a homicidal psychopath if she did.

Have a rescue cat. It stays outside most of the day and inside at night if she feels like it. Not much of a cat person either, but this one is more like a dog than a cat. Great pet.

All cats are cold blooded killers, so yes. My cat lives for cuddling and scratches, but when I would let her out sometimes(before she got stuck in a tree for 10 days) she would routinely catch snakes and bring them in the house.
You don't want your cat killing snakes though. They generally are going to kill harmless snakes that you don't want to take out of your eco system, and if they do go for venomous snakes they run the risk of getting bit.
