Two juveniles have been charged with starting the fires that killed 14 people and destroyed so many homes and businesses last week. Link from WBIR-TV in Knoxville, Tennessee. What should be done with/to them if they are found guilty as charged? LINK

One thing if it was just an accident or if they did it intentionally. I couldn't tell from the article.

if they did it purposely then they should face the maximum allowable penalty by law. if it was something like a camp fire that got away im not sure, but they should face some consequence as a sign to others to make damn sure you know what you are doing.

Not sure if serious but Chimney Tops is a crazy arse hike. Very difficult and only woods around. So...I guess the answer is wood

My understanding is that they intentionally started the fire in the Chimney Tops area which quickly spread due to the drought and the high winds. This was not accidental. My understanding from the very beginning is that this was arson.

Which would be what for a juvenile??

I guess what I mean by intentional is: did they plan on making a camp fire (intentionally making a fire) or did they intend on setting a wildfire and destroying hundreds of acres?
Obviously they are charging them with arson (damage with intent) but it's not clear what their intent was

I live about 100 miles from there as the crow flies. Local news kept us very informed on the status of that fire. There were also other fires burning throughout the Va/Tn/Nc region and there was an outside burn ban in effect at the time in all of those states. The way it is being reported up here now is that these two juveniles intentionally started the fire with the sole purpose of creating a forest fire. But they are not the only people who intentionally started a fire out in the woods in our mountains that week. For days here, smoke was so thick that being outside was very unhealthy. These other fires in the middle of the mountains were not started by lightning or spontaneous combustion. Close to 17,000 acres burned in the Smokies and Gatlinburg area. I believe more arrests are forthcoming.

I don't live far from there either and have been dealing with our own fires and smoke. Many questions still need to be answered. How do two juveniles end up at Chimney Tops alone? They aren't locals. Were they visiting with family? A friend told me that one juvenile admitted to setting the fire in an attempt to get back at a girlfriend that broke up with him.

If they set the fire intentionally then IMHO they should be charged with 14 counts of manslaughter. Because of their actions 14 people died and they are responsible.

They need to be charged with murder or manslaughter.

What would happen to someone who started a fire near their home that knew the wildfire was on its way to it.
I always carry a lighter with me when I am in the marsh. I was taught if another fire is lit and it is coming toward me to light a fire and follow it.
The mother and two daughters probably didn't have time to do this but it is stuck in my head that they could of possibly survived if they could have done this.

they are responsible
I had this conversation with a co worker yesterday. As much as it sounds counterproductive, sometimes people make mistakes that have huge consequences. In this case, it may have been an action that got out of control. These boys need to be the example of why you don't do those things. The justice system these days doesn't do much to prevent future actions.

14 yrs old. they had no idea it would get that bad, but they are responsible. Doubt they intended to kill people. unfortunately it did happen. They should be tried and probably will be held in juvy for a few years. And that will be another unfortunate event because in there they will just become useless when they get out.
